Fun work place but low pay
Full Time Sales Associate (Current Employee), bloomington, mn – December 22, 2012
Pros: discount on health products
Cons: low pay
Low pay with low opportunity for advancement. Hours are very inconsistent. You are paid commission on third party items but are expected to sale a certain amount of GNC product, so there's no reward for selling GNC brand but your forced to do so.

GNC is on the decline
Manager, Assistant Manager (Former Employee), Groton, CT – December 11, 2012
Pros: ability to make greater income with promotional money, 30% employee discount, very good nutritional training, flexibility
Cons: company is on a negative trajectory
I worked at GNC for many years (9) and they were a gracious and flexible employer. With that said, like many companies, it has gone down hill. The company no longer offers new employees commission for selling GNC products which they require to be sold in greater and greater quantities. The culture that is filtering down is now one of margin and squeezing – more... their employees and customers as much as possible where once it was really about living better and health. While it pays pretty well for a retail position it has a lot of demands on its employees and it continues to demand more and offer less from both the employees and the customers who are confronted with ridiculous price mark-ups and shady sales tactics that go from changing the sale to limit the benefits of the gold card to its push to sell lower-quality, high-margin items like calcium chews. It was a very good employer for me but it is rapidly diminishing as a place with a mission an employee can believe in let alone appreciation for their sales associates who really push the business, not the shady executives. But as I said earlier, they are not alone in this trajectory and they are probably not the worst. – less

GNCHopeful – December 20, 2012

I actually may start working in one of the GNC's in Jersey City. How often did you hit your personal sales goal as well as your store goal? I'm looking to work up to becoming a Manager so I'm putting a lot of effort into being the best I can be in the store. Any words of advice?

Management
Store Manager (Current Employee), Greensboro, NC – December 1, 2012
Pros: interaction with customers, driving sales and profits
Cons: short breaks, meeting sales quotas, delegating innumerable tasks
A typical day at work requires planning, driving sales and profit, goal setting, providing world-class customer service, working with other managers, delegating tasks, administrative paperwork, and merchandising. I have learned that planning and preparation is essential to getting the most out of each and every day. As a manager I have learned to work – more... well with all personalities such as being able to delegate, motivate, guide, and educate sales associates. My co-workers are very industrious and take ownership and pride in their work; they are what makes our company successful and profitable. The hardest part of the job is meeting the demands of the selling culture proposed by company standards while managing store merchandise/inventory and paperwork. The most enjoyable part of the job is working with the public and exceeding customer expectations day in and day out. There is never a dull day when working at GNC. – less

Productive, face paced place to work.
Sales Associate (Former Employee), Jacksonville, FL – November 15, 2012
Pros: fun, productive, fast paced
Cons: schedule conflicts due to how small the store was and how many employees there were.
Normally when I get there I clock in and I immediately begin doing whatever needs to be done. For example, I would help customers find something, clean shelves, restock, or I would run the cash register.
I learned a lot about teamwork. I found that it was much easier working with someone else than being the only employee in the store because so much – more... can happen that it can be overwhelming sometimes.
My co workers were pleasant and the management seemed to care about employee needs.
There wasn't really anything hard about the job and it was very enjoyable. Me, my coworkers and the manager always seemed to have fun while we worked. There was never a dull moment. – less

Great team!!
Sales Representative (Former Employee), Ruston, LA – November 13, 2012
Pros: great management and owners!!
Cons: wish there were more hours available.
Ruston is a small college town. Not many hours were available, so I got a second job. At the time I was getting my Masters in Education. I enjoyed GNC for base pay with commission. I typically made fourteen to sixteen dollars per hour.

Good for a lifter
Sales Associate (Former Employee), Coon Rapids, MN – November 9, 2012
Pros: discount
Cons: pressure to sell certain things
I worked here and a couple months later I changed my major. I loved the human body and you can help people better there's. One bad thing is that you worked on commission so I felt bad for sometimes having that motive for a sale. The management was great, very smart people and a fun place to be. The thing that irritated me most was the fact of selling – more... certain products for daily percentages added to much pressure. – less

Great place for company growth
Assistant Manager (Current Employee), Trumbull, CT – October 31, 2012
A typical day entitles helping customers and meeting personal and team goals. I have learned how to communicate with customers and ask lifestyle questions to make them feel comfortable and to help find the right product for them. Management in this company has its pros and cons. They do not help you much once they give you a store but if you do a good – more... job hiring a good staff there should be no problem. My co- workers are awesome. They make it enjoyable to come to work and then they want business to prosper just as much as I do. The hardest part of the job is meeting the number goals. The are certain percentages one must hit but that always doesn't help a customers needs. This makes sales associates deny sales and not provide great customer service every time. The most enjoyable part of the job is helping people get results and motivating them to keep up the good work. – less
