Great place to work for younger man
Shearman (Former Employee), Whitby, ON – October 18, 2012
Pros: it was challenging and well paying
Cons: it was long hours of repetitive labour .
It was a great place to work when I was younger , But after 35 years the 12 hour shifts were getting to be too long . Also it was time for a change . I am recieving a pension from Gerdau Ameristeel but am looking to suppliment this with either full or part time work .

Gerdau-Cambridge Mill upper mngt need better engagement to ordinary employees.
Maintenance Planner (Former Employee), Gerdau - Cambridge Mill – October 9, 2012
They have a very good culture and training for new employees. Only noticed that there was a time when management fail to conduct appropriate investigations nor communicate to concerned persons when situations arose to the detriment of the poor guy who was new and didn't have influence to upper mngt. Seeing the good rather than being always critical – more... on a person actions would have been better. Unbalanced info was given to upper mgnt behind the back of the poor guy. Hope they get better. – less

Pros: good times there
Cons: baghouse, worst place ever
Working there the longest and went thru the good and bad times there. Did my trade there and worked on almost every piece of equipment in there over the years.
Was from one end to the other over the years and up above and down underneath.

leadership at this mill is in dire need of change
Various (Former Employee), Knoxville – May 17, 2013
This company is good but the Knoxville Mill leadership is terrible. Lots of secrets and down talking to employees. They try to portray a great working environment but leadership will be the one that stops you from doing anything to achieve your goals.

Disciplined company with clear standards and goals defined
Reliability Engineer III (Current Employee), Petersburg, VA – April 19, 2013
Pros: provided many opportunities to receive training on components of rcm.
Cons: none.
• Leadership
o Currently direct two Planners and one Reliability Technician
o Worked as a shift manager for operations for one year to obtain frontline supervisory experience and to also develop improvement projects pertaining to methods to produce specialty products.
• RCM
o Key stakeholder in developing standard process flow for Routine Equipment – more... Care program, where the operators clean and perform basic inspections on equipments using their five senses.
o Audited daily round inspections and reduced the amount by 80% and converted them to less frequent PM’s.
o Developed routine routes for:
 Vibration measurements on major rotating equipment such as the Combustion Air Fan Bearings, Main Mill Motor Bearings, Gearbox Bearings, and Exhaust Air Fan Bearings.
 Thermography on pumps, motors, and hydraulic systems. This particular mill uses the most hydraulic systems in North America and therefore is critical to capture potential failures.
 Checking gas and air leaks using ultrasonic technologies.
 Using ultrasound meter to pump grease into bearings in some areas of the plant
 Taking oil samples via bottles and inline particle count from major gearboxes, motor bearing oil, and hydraulic systems. Received certification from ICML as MLAII to perform oil analysis and develop Work Orders to counter any anomalies.
o Key stakeholder in developing and initiating standard swim lane process flow for Work Orders and responsible for ensuring that the Maintenance Facilitators, Production Facilitators and Planners do not deviate from that standard.
o Developed and improved quality of PM’s during the CMMS transition from D7i (EAM) to SAP
 Directed and ensured Rolling Mill Planners input all PM’s based on standardized format.
 Provided technical support for PM’s, such as providing information on volume of grease for each bearing, establishing frequencies for oil changes, setting the correct torque on fasteners, checking the clearances of wear liners and filter change frequencies with correct Beta Ratio filter element.
• Failure Analysis
o Led Failure Analysis meetings with Operations and Maintenance on getting to the root cause of failures that caused maintenance delays over 60 minutes.
o Ensured that Maintenance Facilitators followed the Failure Analysis standards and the information was into PRG (Portal of Routine, pre-formatted database) within 24 hours of the failure.
 Failure Description
 Observation (What and Who)
 Cause Analysis (Asking up to five why’s and developing fish bone diagram which should include variables such as equipment, measurement, personnel, and environment.
 Action Plan (Who and When)
 Evaluation (FA automatically gets sent to Reliability or a Maintenance Sponsor to check if the action plan was actually completed as described.)
 Led Maintenance FA Check meetings to provide support if any of the action plans were behind. – less

Maintenance / Plant Electrician (Former Employee), Canton, Ohio – March 10, 2013
Pros: learning opportunities, good wages and benifets
Cons: long hours, strict attendance point system
There was always something new to learn. Educational opportunities were great as well. Long hours along with weekends & holidays were the normal. Would have retired from there however, after working there for almost 12yrs, I was let go during a low point in my life. In my opinion, legalism trumps hard work and dedication. Over the years, alot of good – more... people were let go. – less

Heavy Machine Operator, Forklift Driver (Former Employee), Canton, OH – October 30, 2012
Long hot days because of the furnaces your work with. For the most part it was easy work. Great people work there, they are easy to get along with and very welcoming. The management was good also easy to get along with. The hardest part would have to be the coiner because it jammed a lot.

Great company, very efficient.
Mill laborer/ crane operator (Former Employee), Joliet, Illinois – October 14, 2012
Pros: great benefits, competitive wages, bonuses.
Cons: workforce needs to flex for the workload.
Only worked there for about 5 months. Started as a mill laborer cutting steel with an acetylene torch. Moved into a crane operator after a few months which was really fun. Watched one of the 7 people that started with me move into a lead position only after a few months, only to get laid off after 5 months. They only laid off about 12 people. Which – more... is a lot since it only seemed like about 75 people total for all 3 shifts. Worst part of the job was cleaning the furnace, and having to run from red hot pieces of steel that snaked up over your head. This was back in 2008, so not sure how this facility is doing now.

Coworkers were great. 1st line supervisors were good. The plant manager had a stick up somewhere. Best part of the job is that there are other opportunities within this company. – less
