General Labourer (Current Employee), Cornwall, ON – August 19, 2013
A great job to learn about the scrap metal and steel industry. Get to enjoy working with people and a great team of employees. Management always took great care and looked out for co-workers. Amazing benefits and overall a great company to work for.
Shearman (Former Employee), Whitby, ON – October 18, 2012
Pros: it was challenging and well paying
Cons: it was long hours of repetitive labour .
It was a great place to work when I was younger , But after 35 years the 12 hour shifts were getting to be too long . Also it was time for a change . I am recieving a pension from Gerdau Ameristeel but am looking to suppliment this with either full or part time work .
They have a very good culture and training for new employees. Only noticed that there was a time when management fail to conduct appropriate investigations nor communicate to concerned persons when situations arose to the detriment of the poor guy who was new and didn't have influence to upper mngt. Seeing the good rather than being always critical – more... on a person actions would have been better. Unbalanced info was given to upper mgnt behind the back of the poor guy. Hope they get better. – less
millwright (Former Employee), Whitby, ON – April 4, 2012
Pros: good times there
Cons: baghouse, worst place ever
Working there the longest and went thru the good and bad times there. Did my trade there and worked on almost every piece of equipment in there over the years. Was from one end to the other over the years and up above and down underneath.
Technician (Former Employee), Vidor, TX – November 22, 2013
Pros: excellent work schedule. decent salary and lots of overtime. five minutes from house
Cons: in house union, making it hard get promoted. promotions made by seniority
This was the job i was going to retire from. I loved what i did. I was a tech for the company. I was in charge of slide gates at the bottom of furnace ladles that controlled the outflow of liquid steel. My job was to monitor controls and prevent malfunctions. Also do any maintenance or rebuilding of addles, slide gates, and tundishes.
Due to the instability – more... of the economy at the time, unfortunately they had to shut down the mill and go back to Brazil where their company was based out of. – less

millwirght (Former Employee), Petersburg, VA – October 26, 2013
Pros: gerdau has good bonuse prog, paid lunches, fair benifits
Cons: you never know when you will get off, make global changes at drop of a hat, always on call, lack of man power
we would have line out and safety contact for the day and based on production and work needing addressing we would plan our day. we never new when one part of the mill would be running at one time. The melt shop could turn around at any time or the mill could change over at any time. We then would split into crews or as one group depending on what needed – more... to be done. We never new when we would get off if a crane was down you don't leave and always on call seven days a week I would average 3,000 3,300 hours a year – less
