Cook – Mothers of McKay Association

General Description:

The Fort McKay First Nation is seeking a motivated and multitask oriented individual who is flexible and works well in a team environment to fill the full-time permanent positions of Cook, reporting directly to the Day Care Manager. The Cook will work with the Kitchen Staff to plan and prepare meals for children as well as elders within the community. They will be responsible for health awareness and preventative health care. This is a permanent full-time position and is based on seventy-five (75) hours bi-weekly.


Assist with organizing the preparation and delivery of health and nutritious meals to daycare and community members
Prepare weekly nutritious meals using the Canada Food Guide to include, breakfast, morning snack, lunch, and afternoon snack
Lead in planning and preparation of meals a 25 or more people or varying ages
Create a monthly shopping list of groceries required to provide the meals
Ensure the meal preparation is on schedule to be ready for appropriate serving times
Be aware of dietary needs for various age groups
If one food choice is not appropriate for all ages ensure that an alternative food choice is available
Watch for and ensure allergens such peanuts are totally avoided
Post a list of individual children’s allergies and regularly update the list as required
Ensure that an alternative is provided if any allergies are present
Maintain a daily, weekly, and monthly cleaning schedule
Ensure that the cooking area is safe and sanitary
Maintain facility, equipment and food items in a safe manner
Prepare and deliver meals-on-wheels as needed to elders
Keep accurate records of meals served and fill out appropriate forms when necessary
Participate in training opportunities
Preform other duties as assigned

Candidates are required to have the following competencies:

Interpersonal Skills
Cooking Terminology
Menu and Meal Planning
Able to work around children and elderly
Cooking equipment for home kitchens – selection and appropriate use
Basic Food preparation methods
Able to relate with people or various age groups
Allergies awareness

Education and Qualifications:

Basic Food Hygiene Certificate or Food Handling Course
Obtain a clean RCMP Security Clearance and Vulnerable Sector Check
First Aid and CPR certified
Experience in a First Nations community is a definite asset
1-2 years’ experience in cooking similar setting would be an asset.
