Customer friendly atmosphere with challenges in efficiency and speed.
Cashier (Former Employee), Barstow, CA – September 11, 2012
Pros: discounts
Cons: insecure hours, laid off
I really enjoyed working for Flying J's even though my employment there was short. I especially loved the contact with customers. Customer service is my specialty so this job came easy. On the subject of challenges it was really about serving the customer quickly and efficiently. I must admit I learned all my daily tasks in just about three days of – more... training and built my speed significantly. The management was outstanding and I would take the position up again if given the opportunity. – less

Very porductive work place. I learned alot while working at the flying j.
Line Cook (Former Employee), Oak Creek, WI – September 8, 2012
Pros: a wonderful staff that was like family.
My typical day at work was very fast paced and fun.
I learn how to work as a team and also by myself, i also learned how to cook different find of full course meals. My co-workers that I worked with day to day where fun to work with. They also taught me things in diferent areas of the kitchen such as dishwashing, QSR, line cooking, etc. There was no – more... hard part of my job. The most enjoyable part of my job was the fact that I provided food that the customers loved to eat and they would come back time and time again for the food that i would cook. I would love to come and work for the Flying J again. I can honestly say that it was the best job that I have ever had. – less

It was fun for awhile but when the take over started it wasn't so much
Line Cook/Prep Cook Dishtank (Former Employee), Whiteland, IN – August 27, 2012
Pros: hard some people that taught me a lot and really enjoyed working with
Cons: just felt like management didn't really care when they heard we where being bought out
I enjoyed working there at first. Later on it got harder to work there management just didn't seem to care who worked and who didn't. If you worked they would ride you into the ground if you didn't they didn't really care. I think part of that was they were being bought out by Pilot. But when i first started i really enjoyed it had a good time made – more... good friends that made me better at being a cook. – less

Very busy and fun workplace
Waitress (Former Employee), Ardmore, OK – August 27, 2012
Pros: always got a break to eat etc.
Cons: sometimes long hours
Make sure that your area was stocked and cleaned, waited on any customers that came in, took orders and took them their food cleaned table off when needed, then took their money and wished them a good day. I learned how to be very polite and wait on the customer to the best of my ablity. The management was great, they were always there to help when – more... needed. Coworkers were great. Everyone got alone. Hardest part was not being able to help all customers when busy. Most enjoyable part was working with the customers and employees – less

FJ IS A GREAT COMPANY TO WORK FOR
General Manager (Former Employee), Wytheville, VA – August 25, 2012
Pros: a great bonus package based on productivity.
Cons: relocation of key personnel
THE EARLY 75 MILES DRIVE SIX DAYS A WEEK FOR 17 YEARS TO WYTHEVILLE, VA WAS A TIME TO REFLECT AND ENJOY GOD'S CREATION AND PLAN MY DAILY WORK ACTIVITY. MY FELLOW ASSOCIATES WERE MEMBERS OF MY EXTENDED FAMILY. WE BUILT A PROFIT CENTER TOGETHER
AND SHARED GOALS & ASPIRATIONS, SUCCESSES & FAILURES. LOSING ASSOCIATE MANAGERS DUE TO A PROMOTION WAS ALWAYS – more... A HAPPY TIME TO CELEBRATE
AND ANOTHER OPPORTUNITY TO TRAIN REPLACEMENTS AND GIVE THEM A CHANCE TO MOVE UP THE LADDER. – less

Working with the customers all day
Cashier/Coffee Hostess (Current Employee), North East, MD – August 16, 2012
When I start my day at work, I deal with all type of people all day long. So you have to be helpful and happy with them. I deal with Truck drivers and fuel customers and General people all day.

I learn something new everyday with the differnt transactions that I do with the customers. My co-works are alot of fun I trained them so I give the best of – more... me so they are the best when they are ready to be on there own. The hardest part of my job sometimes is really nothing. Once I got the system down I was off and running.. The enjoyable part is when the drivers know who u are .. They speak to you.. That makes my day all the time. – less

It was a job
Pilot (Former Employee), Orange, TX – August 7, 2012
Pros: worked with good people, paid the bills
Cons: micromanaging will drive you nuts
What can I say? The company was excellent to work for while it was owned and operated by Flying J alone and managed out of Ogden, UT. After filing for chapter 13 bankruptcy, Pilot Oil, Inc seized the opportunity to purchase the failing company. Once this was allowed by our fail-safe court system in this country, the company quickly changed for the worse.

Waitress (Former Employee), Carlisle, PA – August 6, 2012
Pros: it taught me a lot of customer service
Cons: you never knew what you would make
I waitressed at the Flying J through school. I became close with some of my customers and they would regularly come and sit in my section. I liked the fast pace it would always make my shift go by fast. It was a good place to start out but I didn't want to work in the restuart business all my life.

It was always changing which made the job hard.
Assistant Restaurant Manager (Former Employee), Houston, TX – August 3, 2012
This was a hard place to work at cause we where open 24 hours a day 7 days a week 365 days a year. Which i did learn how to deal with having a family and having a family at work as well. Our management team was a great one. With the co workers they where not just workers they became family because we all spent alot of time together at work. The hardest – more... part was working on special days like easter but you learn after a few years you can only be in one place at a time and your kids learn to understand if you don't work they don't eat. The most enjoyable thing about working at a place like this was you had truck drivers that would call a head of time to find out if you where working or not and that meant they made a special stop there just to have you waite on them. – less

Tough, but worth the effort
Fuel Pumper/Maintenance/Deli/Cashier (Current Employee), NJ – August 1, 2012
Pros: decent pay rate, benefits, training
Cons: manager staff, flow of business
A typical day at work is tough, you come in and immediately, if you're on maintenance, begin cleaning showers. The morning guys don't have much time as they are the repair people. In this job, you learn everything from cleaning, to landscaping and other general things that involve repair jobs. The management has changed dramatically. They don't do great – more... interviews and one manager can be quite sexist.
The coworkers are great people to be around, but they lack a quick hand, it really becomes a team oriented place by the simple fact of how busy it is. The hardest part is keeping up with hundreds of people in one day and making it their, "home away from home." – less

Co-Manager (Former Employee), Franklin, KY – July 30, 2012
Pros: meals were 50% off for lunch
Cons: long days
Every day had a different story to tell, I found out that people serving in retail has to have a high tolerance to accept actions from customers. Yet, it was well worth it. Employee's are no different they want to get paid but, do as little work as possible to get it.
