Flex-N-Gate makes metal and plastic automotive components and assemblies, such as bumpers, grilles, hinges, interior panels and pillars, latches, pedal systems, parking brakes, and running boards. The company also offers prototyping, mechanical assembly, and sequencing services. Flex-N-Gate makes products for a wide range of car platforms; customers have included BMW, Chrysler, Ford, Honda, General Motors, Toyota, and Volvo. It has about 50 manufacturing and engineering facilities in Argentina, Canada, Mexico, Spain, and the US. Flex-N-Gate, which was formed in 1956, is owned by Shahid Khan.
Khan was forced to pay a hefty federal tax bill, reportedly more than $65 million, in 2010. Khan filed a lawsuit against accounting firm later that year, alleging fraudulent advice caused significant losses.
Flex-N-Gate has expanded its global manufacturing presence in recent years through acquisitions. It is now buying the automotive headlamps and taillights business of Ford subsidiary Automotive Components Holdings. In keeping with the company's strategy of growing its business by buying up distressed companies at fire-sale prices, Flex-N-Gate acquired some of the bumper business of the bankrupt Meridian Automotive, including operations in Michigan and Indiana in 2009. In 2008 Flex-N-Gate acquired bankrupt molded plastics maker Blackhawk Automotive Plastics, expanding its interior plastics assemblies product lines.
The company name comes from Flex-N-Gate's first product: a stock rack for pickup trucks that included a roll-up rear gate. More recent offerings have included step bumpers with integrated tow hitches. – less
