A leading manufacturer of sports nutrition products is currently looking for a full time QA Manager. The incumbent is responsible to manage & direct all aspects of the company’s quality and food safety programs; this includes ensuring compliance to established QA/HACCP programs and regulatory standards by CFIA, NHP, and export requirements. The incumbent manages and supports the Quality Assurance team, and participates in the overall technology and business planning process to ensure that resources align with business goals. This position reports directly to both the CFO and CEO.

Responsibilities:

  • Assists in the development, implementation, and maintenance of a companywide quality assurance strategy and plan utilizing Statistical Process Controls
  • Responsible for overseeing the company’s quality system from the supply chain of raw material procurement to the finished product sale. This includes maintaining and improving the company system for qualifying raw material vendors to performing vendor quality audits as required
  • Assures quality controls during the company’s business processes these include; purchased material, in-process material, completed products, as well as the company’s sanitation program
  • Accountable for the maintenance and implementation of all document control to include; customer specifications, raw materials specifications, testing, and the Quality Manual to ensure total document control traceability
  • Input, review, and control of the Business Quality Manual to ensure that the business operates at the standards required by customers and regulatory certification bodies
  • Establish, monitor, and prepare product quality metrics for existing and new products manufactured and distributed in the plant
  • Develop and maintain QA procedures and work instructions for departmental processes, this includes providing input in the development of process specifications, batch records, and other documents related to quality for manufacturing
  • Makes recommendations, reviews and approves testing plans and methods, including scope, test methodology, and test case identification. The incumbent is also responsible for auditing calibration of equipment
  • Investigation of all quality complaints, including documentation and implementation of corrective and preventative actions
  • Input for the QA Budget and consolidates QA project planning to budget. This includes meeting project objectives and delivery of a quality project on schedule and within budget
  • Interpret and enforce regulatory guidelines and GMP practices to ensure compliance. Performs and/or oversees HACCP and GMP Audits of the process as well as employee training in these areas
  • Responsible for all internal & external audits, analysis, and recommendations for continuous improvement of the company’s existing quality systems. Prepares for and participates in CFIA, Organic Audits, and other third party customer audits
  • Maintain good communications with the relevant regulatory bodies and ensures that all required permits and approvals are obtained on site
  • In conjunction with other cross functional departments; establish, maintain, and continuously improve supplier performance. Deliverables include material qualification process, receiving inspection plan, in process inspection and testing criteria, final inspection criteria, and quality system audits
  • Collaborate with the R & D Coordinator, supplier partners, and other cross functional team members to establish and maintain specifications for raw materials, components, manufacturing, and finished goods including:

o New products and materials under development
o Performance, safety, and reliability testing protocols
o Manufacturing quality plan
o Staff quality training and compliance with GMP’s and other regulatory authorities

  • Performs all necessary administration duties relating to management of staff; including interviewing, hiring & termination recommendations, training, and performance reviews. This also includes required documentation, timely reporting of concerns, follow- up on employee performance management issues, and disciplinary actions
  • Develops and prepares various reports and information of departmental goals, objectives, and recommendations in keeping with the company short and long-term plans
  • Other duties as directed by the CEO or CFO

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

  • Bachelor Degree in Food Science & Technology, Chemistry, or a related field of study
  • Must have 5 plus years’ experience working in a food manufacturing environment as a Quality Assurance Manager, including prior experience in QA Program implementation and Lean Manufacturing
  • Those candidates with knowledge of Food, Dairy, NHP Regulations, HACCP, SOP’s, and prior experience with 3rd party audits will be preferred
  • Thorough knowledge of labeling, including nutritional labeling and statistical quality methods is required
  • Must be able to interpret and enforce regulations, understand general plant rules, and GMP’s
  • Strong organizational, analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills; the work also includes departmental budget preparation
  • Superior communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills in order to promote and communicate ideas and solutions across cross-functional teams to rapidly solve issues with minimal conflict
  • Manage/coach/mentor team members, and provide technical direction to encourage and support a high performance work culture
  • Work well in a team environment, with a proven ability to coordinate activities with other departments; R & D, Purchasing, Manufacturing, Finance, and Marketing
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (both written and verbal), with ability to prepare reports and prepare product/method recommendations. This also includes excellent mathematical and/or scientific skills
  • Must have no allergies to dairy, nuts, or whey based products as the position involves taste testing
  • Strong computer skills in Microsoft Office (Word & Excel), knowledge of BV an asset
