good work life balance
Customer Service Advisor (Current Employee) –  Clairmont, AB17 January 2017
-very fast paced most days but management sets unrealistic goals for month end
-learned to multi task and organize a lot better
-co workers are a good team to work with
-hardest part is to get everything all done in one day
-making the customer happy and finishing the goal that you set for your self to get done for the day

Sneaky tactics by management
Customer Service (Former Employee) –  Alberta16 January 2017
Zero support for the role I was in. Self admitting management said they "failed at providing support", yet its your problem you aren't trained properly to excel at your job. High stress environment and unreal expectations. Try to make suggestions to better the work environment and they are shrugged off because its not part of "Service Excellence". No job security. Management uses bully tactics and intimidation on a daily basis and have no trust. No room for advancement unless you know someone. Overall a poor experience for myself and my peers. Stay away.
Pros
Pension, stock plan
Cons
High stress environment, no support, horrible office dynamic, low job moral, no recognition

Great place to work with great people
Project Manager (Former Employee) –  Edmonton, AB6 January 2017
Worked with an amazing group of people during my 10 years at Finning. The experience I have gained will be with me for a lifetime. The hardest part of the job was watching co-workers leave due to layoffs. With the state of the oil industry in flux, job security is a concern.
Pros
Good atmosphere, great people
Cons
job security, workload increase due to layoffs

No longer the best...
Mechanic (Former Employee) –  Alberta6 January 2017
As an apprentice was told about "the good old days" at Finning.
Seems those days have come and gone.
Witnessed several changes in management, not always for the best.
Company is very top heavy and can't seem to make effective or sound business decisions in this economy and now with their move into Sask. The little guy (tradesman) always loses.
Job security was always questionable. Safety number one although sometimes to the point of excess. Otherwise good pay, top notch benefits. Enjoyed the variety of work within the company.
Pros
Competitive pay and benefits, good hours.
Cons
Upper management similar to our federal government. Union.

No raises in many years, layoff's constantly so you're always wondering if today's the day they walk you out the door.
Wouldn't recommend working here.

Huge Layoffs
Buyer II (Former Employee) –  Edmonton, AB2 January 2017
Decent place to work, work-life-balance was great at this company. Unfortunately from the time i was there they downsized 3 times in a matter of a year. Most people and the environment seemed down because of the initial rounds of layoffs, it only made it worse once the other two happened.

Culture is rather stagnant, everyone acts busy when in reality the workplace is a regular work environment.
Pros
Good hours
Cons
job security.

Low job moral and frequently high and unnecessary turnover
Administrative Assistant (Former Employee) –  Edmonton, AB19 December 2016
Day to day staff and co-workers are good to work with

Cross-training opportunities in other areas of your department are available (due to team reductions)

Upper management is an "old boys club / cliche", out of touch with day to day operation of company and lower level management
Pros
cafeteria, good benefits, diverse workload
Cons
long hours, low moral, redundant work processes

high turnover and poor leadership. Their core values do not align with business management. They expect you to work hard with no incentive or reward. Opportunities for lateral moves but limited to other promotions.
Pros
good pension plan
Cons
long hours, lack of recognition, high politics, poor compensation

The worst office environment I have ever seen
Customer Service (Former Employee) –  Alberta9 December 2016
This place is what nightmares are made of.

They hire and fire faster then the weather changes. Do not give up a stable job to go to this company.
No training, they fully excpect you to know all of their processes. Others would rather hoard information then share to benefit the customer and company.

When you introduce suggestions you get brushed off.
Unbalanced work load throughout the "team".

Bad behaviour is rewarded within the office, very unprofessional with employees yelling highly inappropriate curse words at each other as a joke.
Constent behind the back snickering, negative atmosphere. Management hears all of this and nothing is done.

Good riddance, do yourself a favour and stay away.
Pros
None
Cons
atrocious office behaviour, no job security, no training, no room for advancement

Big company with good benefits
Customer Service Advisor (Current Employee) –  Surrey, BC23 November 2016
Finning is the benchmark standard of the heavy equipment industry in Canada. The benefits are great, there is training available for all aspects, and they seem to promote from within when possible. Finning empowers it's staff to find solutions. This gives employees the ability to think outside the box and present ideas. Finning also expects its staff to learn on their own. For some this can be challenging as they learn to navigate all the different processes and procedures. One of the most challenging aspects is the Lawson program that sales and service staff are required to use. Safety is a top priority. Workers at all levels are expected to engage and buy into the safety culture. It's a good company to work for long term and I would recommend it to any of my peers.
Pros
safety rewards, good pension program, stock options.
Cons
takes time to master all the computer programs and process used.

Nice facility to work at but they are closing down.
Maintenance Millwright (Current Employee) –  Red Deer, AB4 November 2016
I chose finning as a place to work for the long term. Unfortunately it is an unstable economy and finning management does not plan accordingly. Its a shame that 200 good people will be left without a job or displaced due to other facilities being underutilized.
Pros
Home every night. Good pay, Good hours.
Cons
Unreliable

Customer Service Manager (CSM) (Former Employee) –  AB31 October 2016
Enjoyed my time but was also happy to leave. Way to much of an old boy bully mentality. No work life balance, senior managers have a work harder not smarter mentality. Company does not keep up with technology to make things easier and more accurate for all.
Pros
lots of training
Cons
Some very poor homegrown GM's and VP's

Parts Technician - Mining Operations (Current Employee) –  Ekati Diamond Mine12 October 2016
The benefits and opportunities can't be beat although in this economy the company has made some major changes that affect the people on the floor. i learned a lot with this company and was able to transfer around and learn even more. my Co-Workers have always been amazing and have been a family to me.
hardest part of my job is the politics but they are everywhere.
the most enjoyable part of my job was working with the mechanics and seeing CATs New gear every year.
Pros
benefits
Cons
not enough training.

Great first job I suppose but a meat grinder otherwise
Operations (Former Employee) –  Edmonton, AB6 October 2016
Finning is undergoing a "transformation". They're stripping out most of the experienced (i.e. well paid) employees and replacing them with people far too junior to do a decent job. This means lots, and I mean LOTS of meetings where "no idea is bad" (hint - MOST ideas are bad) and little or no direction. This also means nobody will stick their neck out to make an actual decision. If you like that sort of thing, go for it.
Pros
Decent pay if you don't mind the occasional "salary freeze"
Cons
Extremely limited opportunities for career advancement

They have too much of a hire and fire mentality.
The benefits were amazing if yu get a chance to use them.
There are too many VPs and managers that have control issues.
The enjoyable part of the job was working within different departments
Pros
Excellent Benefits that start on your first day
