We are seeking qualified Scrap Buyer’s in the Manitoba and Ontario regions, based out of Winnipeg. This position is responsible for the procurement of ferrous and non-ferrous scrap for our processing & auto wrecking facilities within the regions. Reporting to the Sr.Manager – Scrap Sourcing & Business Development; the candidate’s will also coordinate activities with regional General Managers, Regional Yard Buyers and Mill Buyers as well as Transportation, Operations, and Accounting personnel.
The Scrap Buyer continually investigates new sources of scrap and develops relationships leading to the procurement of all grades required for the Scrap Processing facilities. The incumbent must be a self-starter with the ability to initiate business, possess strong negotiating, communication, and problem-solving skills. They must be knowledgeable of all costs associated with the purchase of ferrous and non-ferrous materials as well as the current market to provide optimum total cost strategies. They will be responsible for market research and forecasting duties to coordinate the development of short and long-term purchasing strategies.
The ideal candidate will have experience in the metal processing environment. Preference will be given to persons holding a degree in a related field as well as a combination of experience/education. The candidate must also have the ability to function both effectively and independently as a member of a cross-functional team and will demonstrate teamwork and communication skills with a commitment to cooperation and collaboration among the General Scrap Group’s business functions and other Evraz North American facilities. They will be proficient with Microsoft Office software including Excel and Word as well as Scrap Management software. Candidate will have strong oral and written skills, good statistical analysis skills, will be market research orientated, and demonstrate strong knowledge of the scrap recycling industry.
Off site travel will be required, meeting in person with current and potential suppliers to establish and maintain effective market relationships. Responsibilities include settlement of discrepancies within management guidelines, maintaining quality standards, and coordinating ongoing supply chain activities. The incumbent also monitors and maintains continuity of supply, as well as the safety-related and environmental aspects of materials purchased.
