The Province of Newfoundland and Labrador has 48 electoral districts. Each electoral district requires a Returning Officer to oversee election operations for the specific district in which he or she lives.

Elections Newfoundland and Labrador is seeking a Returning Officer for the electoral district of BONAVISTA SOUTH.

Returning Officer duties include hiring and training staff and booking suitable polling station locations for elections and by-elections.

The Returning Officer role is continuous unless the position is vacated by resignation or removal. General elections take place every four years and by-elections can be called at any time. A Returning Officer must be willing and able to work these events as they are called.

Additionally, a Returning Officer may be called upon to complete small projects between electoral events, such as reviewing electoral boundaries.

To qualify for appointment, applicants must:

- reside in the electoral district of Bonavista South
- be a Canadian Citizen
- be 18 years of age or older
- have extensive knowledge of the electoral district
- be familiar with provincial voting rules and regulations
- possess excellent verbal communication skills
- possess excellent customer service skills
- be able to send and receive emails, operate fax machines, and use Microsoft Office products
- be willing to be trained in the Special Ballot voting computer system and act as a Special Ballot Officer
- have a driver's licence and be willing to travel throughout the entire electoral district
- hire and train electoral field staff
- work extended hours, including some evenings, weekends and possibly statutory holidays

A Returning Officer is currently paid:

- $5000 for the election period (and $22 per hour for work in between elections)
- $1250 for Special Ballot work
- $125 per training session, per day
- $125 per Special Ballot facility (Personal Care Homes and/or Hospitals)
- Reimbursement for travel expenses as per current Treasury Board rates
