The Company

ECOSYNTHETIX is an innovation-driven producer of renewable chemicals engaged in the development, manufacture, and commercialization of bio-based technologies to replace petroleum-based industrial products. Current and developing markets include adhesives, construction products, personal care products and a strong focus on the paper, paperboard and packaging market segment. Our Centre of Innovation in Burlington, Ontario, is home to our product development and applications testing laboratories and our state of the art pilot plant. The Position

As part of the Paper Business and reporting to the Manager, Product Development and Lab Services, the Senior NPD Scientist will initiate, plan and execute an R&D project portfolio to meet both short and longer-term goals and deliver new bio-based products ready for commercialization in paper markets. The Senior NPD Scientist interacts extensively with other senior scientists, lab staff, pilot line personnel, technical service field personnel, and sales force to ensure timely project execution and business growth. His/her success will be measured by the idea to market cycle time, the strength of NDP value propositions, and the impact of the NPD in the revenue growth of the paper business.

The Responsibilities

  • Turn ideas into demonstrable, producible and marketable new products
  • Search and generate NP ideas from internal and external sources
  • Screen and prioritize NPD ideas/concepts to meet the company‚Äôs NPD business strategy
  • Collaborate with other areas of the company to capture the voice of the customer and to evaluate the business case
  • Translate the voice of the customer into functional design targets
  • Plan, implement, test and verify design targets at the bench-scale, pilot-scale and mill-scale
  • Design the overall plan for each NPD project selecting the best avenues of approach
  • Develop/implement methods, techniques, instrumentation, and devices needed to NPD projects
  • Coordinate the activities of staff assigned to the project
  • Conduct mill trials necessary to verify earlier business judgments
  • Work closely and synergistically with other scientists, engineers and technical staff
  • Share technical knowledge and expertise with technical and scientific staff
  • Communicate progress and results from NPD projects effectively
  • Write technical research papers, project reports, grants and patents
  • Keep abreast of technical developments and the literature in the field
  • Proactively implement and maintain laboratory safety standards

The Candidate

  • BSc with a PhD degree in chemical engineering, polymer/organic chemistry, materials science, paper science, emulsion polymerization, or equivalent transferable skill set
  • Broad background and a comprehensive understanding of the paper industry
  • Significant experience (10+ years) in an industrial R&D setting
  • Proven track record of new product innovation leading to successful new commercial products
  • Expert knowledge of organic chemistry, carbohydrate or polymer chemistry and paper science
  • Fundamental understanding of relevant analytical techniques
  • Ability to multi-task, manage demanding priorities and complex situations
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Experience with statistical analysis and design of experiments (DOE)
  • External scientific expertise demonstrated by scientific publishing in the field, patents and grants
  • Must be eligible to work in Canada
