EPCOR's Distribution & Transmission (D&T) Team is currently recruiting for Journeyman Powerline Technician's to join their team.

Up to fifteen (15) Permanent Full Time positions are available.

In the Power Lineman III position you would be working on energized aerial systems (120-25,000 volts) using rubber glove and other live line techniques. The accountabilities of this role include, but are not limited to:

  • Constructing, repairing and maintaining new and existing D&T aerial systems up to 500kV.
  • Training apprentices and supervising non-trades personnel.
  • Responding to emergency conditions and environmental hazards.
  • Performing administrative duties using written and basic computer skills as required.

In the Cableman position you would participate in the day-to-day work engaged in the construction, repair and maintenance of EPCOR's Underground Residential (URD) and Underground Industrial (UID) Distribution Systems, the Downtown Network system, Power Cable feeder systems and/or Underground Oil Filled Pipe Type (OFPT and XLPE) transmission systems. Work is done on different types of power cables such as PILC (paper insulated lead covered), XLPE (cross linked polyethylene) and EPR cables (Ethylene Propylene Rubber).

The accountabilities of this role include, but are not limited to:

  • Cable testing (VLF, hipot, megger testing)
  • Splicing Cross Linked Polyethylene (XLPE), Ethylene Propylene Rubber (EPR) and/or Paper Insulated Lead Covered (PILC) cables.
  • Terminating live front & dead front equipment.
  • Trouble shooting.
  • Inspecting work completed by contractors.
  • Fault locating.
  • Switching on energized electrical apparatus and system automation components up to 25 kV.
  • Promoting safe and organized work sites.
  • Mentoring and training apprentices.
  • Supervising non-trades personnel.
  • Responding to emergency conditions and environmental hazards.
  • Performing various administrative functions - report writing, as built information, timesheets.
  • Identifying controls for hazards and safe work planning.

The successful candidates must possess the following qualifications:

  • Grade 12 or G.E.D.
  • Journeyman Powerline Technician certificate or Power Lineman certificate. Equivalent certifications/experience in this trade will be considered.
  • 3-5 years of related experience at the Journeyman level.
  • Proven ability to read technical drawings and schematics (hard copy and electronic).
  • Familiar with Occupational Health & Safety regulations and will be required to obtain a working knowledge of related provincial safety legislation, AEUC, OH&S and city bylaws.
  • Valid Class 5 Alberta Motor Vehicle Operator's License, with 6 or fewer demerits. A driver's abstract will be required.
  • Ability to qualify for and maintain an EPCOR driver's permit.
  • Working knowledge of the Microsoft suite of products including, Excel and Word.
  • To meet the demands of the position, good physical health is required. Clearance on pre-placement medical and drug and alcohol testing will be required.
  • Specific to a Power Lineman 3 working on Aerial systems you require a thorough working knowledge of:

o Protective grounding
o Switching
o Climbing of poles with belt and spurs
o Aerial bucket/hydraulic equipment
o Tension stringing devices
o Electrical safe work practices

  • Specific to a Cableman working on Underground systems you require a thorough working knowledge of:

o Protective grounding
o Switching
o Electrical safe work practices
o Cable testing instruments and
o Working in excavations, manholes and vaults

  • As a personal respirator is required for some job functions in the Underground area, a clean shaven appearance is required while a respirator is worn.
  • Clearance on a background security check is required.

Additionally, these would be valuable assets for successful candidates to possess:

  • Valid Class 1 Alberta Motor Vehicle Operator's License, or the ability to obtain it within three months of hire date with 6 or fewer demerits.
  • Experience on network systems or on PILC cables.
  • Demonstrable hands-on knowledge and operational skills on Underground switchgear, cables, testing methods and automation components.
  • Working knowledge of EPCOR Safety Manual & EPCOR procedures and work practices current to within 6 months.

The successful candidates will also be results oriented with well-developed motivation and organizational skills. Wage: December 2012 to December 2013 - $46.24 per hour
December 2013 to December 2014 - $47.86 per hour
December 2014 to December 2015 - $49.54 per hour

Hours of work: 8 hours per day between the hours of 0700h - 1800h, 5 days per week, Monday through Friday. However, in accordance with Article 6.01.01.02 of the Agreement, the work week may be any 5 consecutive days.
