Great place to work.
Communications and Design Advisor (Current Employee), Calgary, AB – April 24, 2013
Pros: free flavoured coffee in kitchens!
Cons: not always opportunities given for advancement.
Great remuneration. Great benefits. Great overall company to work for. Learning provided, flexible hours if required, good teamwork. Management can be ego driven, and advancement is limited.

Devon needs management shake up
asset (Former Employee), calgary – April 10, 2013
Pros: steady pay no real challenge
Cons: no real future
worked for few year in the thermal side of Devon Canada.
Devon needs to send some of the mid and high level management back to school. They just know simple gas reservoir and can not handle the SAGD complexity.
devon also needs to change the simplified view of thermal projects and get to the details or stick to gas business and sell the SAGD.

Was good company to work for but was there only there for 4 yrs. and seen high high turnover of operators.
Gas Plant operator (Former Employee), Fort St John, BC – March 13, 2013
Pros: great people to work with. give saftey as number one.
Cons: high turn over for contractors..
Start my day. Drive to my sour plant. Walk through plant. If nothing pressing go review wells on SCADA. Then do dailly books and plan day. Winter time alot of dealing with hydrates using all methods. Changing particle and coal filters. Dealt with water plant at camp..Operated turbines, wakashaws,and ajax..Taken many courses through Devon. Well and compressor – more... optimization. Trouble shooting catydines..countless saftey courses..

I enjoyed working for Devon. And recomend them as place of employemnet...If you become an employee not contractor. – less

Good job security because there is no accountability
Operator (Former Employee), Northern Alberta – January 4, 2013
Pros: - hourly rates are very good and they are willing to spend money to fix problems
Cons: don't expect a career, it's just a job
It's so hilarious about the last commenter mentioning how hard they try to tell you - never show you - that they are the best oil company to work for, because I experienced the same thing.

My experience was that management/supervisor expectations for employee performance were very low, and in turn, they expected you to collect a paycheque without showing – more... any ambition to do more.

There is too much of an old boys club in the field; too many supervisors hiring their buddies and far too many complacent Anderson Exploration/Home Oil guys running the show. – less

stay away, poor name in the industry
operator (Former Employee), alberta – October 18, 2012
Pros: a pay cheque, not much else.
Cons: micromanagement
- Zero trust
- I learned there are better places to work
- Poor very old school management
- Work with some good guys
- Very strange company, would always tell you how great a place it is to work, over and over. Have never had a job like that before
- Best part of the day was leaving,
-

- There are much better places to work

Sounds like you didn't fit in with the culture. Were you fired or did you just decide to look for another job? Do you realize how tough times are for many in the US?

Great place to work as long as you don't mind being treated with a kindergarten mentality.
Competent, hard worker. (Former Employee), Calgary – September 23, 2012
Pros: great atmosphere until 2009....then things started to get a liitle strange....very tense.
Cons: favortism, management overlooks sub par performance, more concerned if you are 5 minutes late than what is accomplished at overall.
Hmmm. Great place to work until 2009. Open door policy?...........
Hmmm.... Don't even think about rocking the boat. "Cult like" policies
and procedures. Seems they will hire anyone. There was a girl who showed up in " Hello Kitty" attire every day. Hmmm....

So, were you fired or did you voluntary look elsewhere? I'm always curious about the extremely negative comments, blaming the culture etc. There are avenues for change...being disgruntled is not one of them. Making suggestions through proper channels, then seeking consensus is more worth your time.

My husband has been trying to get a job with Devon for some time now and despite his qualifications and experience, they have never even offered an interview. Why is this? Do they really have that many people applying for one position? Two of the positions he applied for were lower grade then his current position, is Devon doing some sort of hiring freeze?

nonidiot – March 12, 2013

Depends on the department you are with. I experienced supervisory management with lackluster intelligence and ambitiion. (Always looking out for their favorites, even though they are so incompetent. My direct supervisor was just looking to save his but and just putting in time. However, Manager of department was great. Intelligent and forward looking.I believe Devon is a great place to work, they just need to get rid of dead wood in some depts,

Compensation is Great but Require Long Days and Weekend Work
Geologist (Former Employee), Oklahoma City, OK – April 27, 2013
Pros: high compensation
Cons: lot's of overtime
I was a geologist at Devon. I had a great income with great benefits. However, at the same time, I had to earn that income by putting in extra hours each day and some weekend and overnight work was required. Overall it was a great place to work with nice people, but at times I did feel like I was just a number.

Very Productive and great place to work but...
Field End User Support (Current Employee), Oklahoma City, OK – March 3, 2013
I was very productive at Devon. There was never a day when I was twiddling my fingers. Great people to work with. Unfortunately, there are some managers who should not be in their current role. Most of the managers are very knowledgeable and will go out on a limb for you. Others will just push their work on you at the last minute and really wont address – more... problems to you, rather to other people and hopefully you are in good with them to find out – less

Great company heading in wrong direction
Land (Current Employee), Houston, TX – February 22, 2013
Pros: office in houston, texas (closing), wellness center, the people in houston
Cons: officers and directors more interested in rebuilding oklahoma city and less with shareholder value, like many companies - becoming an it and supply chain company.
Great company heading in the wrong direction;
Mergers were all about jobs for Oklahoma;
I've learned alot about the Land business;
Management was great and would try to help if possible;
The best part of my job - the co-workers / the people!

Company is not interested in hiring good employees
Environmental Specialist (Current Employee), Baggs, Wyoming – February 7, 2013
Pros: don't know of any?
Cons: definately against the employee and their welfare.
This is a cold corporate environment. Potential employees have to submit to frustration during their application and management doesn't really want to be bothered. Their job description is meant to lure good people, but their application methods are demeaning and clumsy. They chase more good people away.

Unrestrictive and Promotes Education
Geoscience Technologist (Former Employee), Houston, TX – January 25, 2013
Pros: 9/80 schedules; dress code; tuition reimbursement program
Cons: location;
The amazing culture of improvement at Devon was a huge plus. Training was not frowned upon at Devon. Managers encouraged employees to take a certain number of necessary courses per year. Also Devon provided reimbursement for employees that wanted to attend Universities for continual education. At times, the company even allowed for using company hours – more... to attend those courses. – less

Good place to work with lots of challenges and potential to grow.
Senior Data Analyst (Former Employee), Houston, TX – January 1, 2013
Pros: challenging and rewarding work environment
Cons: excessive travel at times
Unfortunately, Devon has decided to close the Houston office and I did not want to relocate to Oklahoma City. I supported the Business Continuity department for the past 4 years and also supported the company as a Life Safety first responder.

Shady, not able to advance, nor able to discuss things with individuals
Temp Job for records department (Former Employee), Oklahoma City, OK – December 20, 2012
Cons: was a temp position, hour lunch, did not have my own space.
A typical day at work would be to pull files research them on the various links. Than printing out a label and putting it on the files than taking them to scanning. I learned different document types. I had two very helpful co-workers. The hardest part of my job was being underestimated due to my age. The job itself was easy to learn and over all fun – more... due to the fact of researching, and being able to feel like I had accomplished a lot with the files iI had finished that very day. – less

JosephR – January 16, 2013

He gets hired into a temporary position - then complains he can't advance. Temporary positions are . . . temporary, not part of the overall structure of an enterprise. He says he got job satisfaction and the work was "fun" (I get that) No comment about not getting paid. So - he gets hired for a temporary position which is enjoyable and he gets paid. That is actually more than you can expect from a temp position. You didn't get your own space? You are temporary. No, they are not going to realize real estate for a guy who is not going to stay. Oh, and if you want to "advance" in your next position, learn how to self edit for spelling.
