Pros: free accomodation/ hotel / meals
Cons: 12 hours per day
The Davey Tree Expert Company provides residential and commercial tree and landscape service throughout North America.

Davey tree has been a good reputable company i ever work for. they take care of their employees and have excellent equipments to complete the job. besides that, my co-workers were so nice and sociable at work. the hardest part of the – more... job is when its snow too much and gets really cold outside because the chemicals freezes and we can't be able to do the job. – less

The best part of the job was getting to use the chainsaw, I liked the hours and the overtime agreement of the condensed work week.

good place to work
Foreman (Former Employee), monticello, indiana – April 24, 2013
it was a good and stable place to work. The only reason I don't work there anymore is because after 12 years with the company the contract ended.

tree worker
Climber Pruner (Current Employee), New York, NY – March 12, 2013
Pros: great climber and worker
Cons: not knowing the name of every tree species
Identifying tree I.Ds, great team player work well by myself as well, always on time early in the morning around 6am. Learned how to climb multiply trees daily and better ways on how to inspect for the ASian Longhorned Beetle bugs. Management was good structure the climbers right direction to get the work done within the day,CO Workers are great they – more... become like your family we look out for each other by assisting. The hardest part of the job is Climbing 10 Huge trees in one day and inspecting it 100 percent throughly looking for tine hole that the beetle may infest. Most enjoyable part of the job is i love what i do i get my workout and climb the trees. – less

This place was a joke...
Night Shift Mechanic (Former Employee), Wheeling – March 12, 2013
Pros: not a d*mn thing
Cons: everything that is the opposite of the pros...
From the so-called "management" using the place as their personal garage during work hours, and the inventory as their personal supply for parts for their side businesses to the hiring of incompetent relatives to the disgusting and stomach turning sexual innuendos with the beastly secretary all day long(vomit), this place was a joke. The main manager – more... of the Fleet Service couldn't order the correct part if you gave him the part number and the phone number to call. The HR person has the worst attitude and the biggest chip on her shoulder, especially if you don't return the vomitous sexual jokes she and some of the other employees make all day. The promises they make you at the time of hire might as well come from a politician, cause they don't mean anything. The management is never wrong, even if they are, they will blame the night shift mechanics. The management as a whole was a joke. "Provided training", yea right. "Generous compensation", no way, barely enough to make ends meet. More than 1 year without a review or raise is more like it. Other employees have gone for more than 5 years without a raise. There is "mandatory" more than 10 hour days, but if there is no work, be prepared to see the day shift get work while the night shift gets to burn a vacation day. Oh, and you can bet the day shift always has work, especially the incompetent cousin-in-law of the maintenance manager. "We have a fully stocked work truck", except for any tool that you might actually need for the job. Oh, and there is no insurance provided for your tools while they are in the non-secured building, so if one of the climbers snags your tools while you are gone, too bad for you. Feel free to apply for this job, you will be sorry just like I was after a year of employment. Whatever you do, don't photocopy a piece of paper, cause that's a safety violation! – less

Not a "career" job
Inventory Arborist (Former Employee), Worcester, MA – February 15, 2013
Pros: pay, when weather holds out.
Cons: clicky, poor management practices, monotonous
Good job if you realize it is not a "career" move. If you apply thinking you will advance internally, it will certainly never happen. The hard working, and knowledgeable are treated harshly and unfair while the inept, and lazy are coddled as management tends to play favorites. Work culture here is also very "clicky". Work is extremely monotonous. You – more... are also expected to work 10+ hour days as well as weekends. If they could push you more, they would. Job is also contracted, so it could cease at any time. Inclement weather and you don't work, you do not get paid. If weather holds out for an extended time, pay can be OK – less

Good company with respect for family responsibilities
Office Coordinator (Current Employee), Park City, IL – December 30, 2012
Pros: time and a half for overtime, healthcare options include medical, dental, vision, long term disability, life - annual salary reviews
Cons: limited potential for professional growth, particularly for women
This is a good company that respects the responsibilities we all have for our families, while still being clear about performance expectations. Benefits are good, especially in today's climate, and long term employment is not only possible but encouraged.

Good Company, Local Management Inept
Survey Arborist (Current Employee), Worcester, MA – December 10, 2012
Pros: good hourly wage, people you work with are fun and interesting
Cons: sweat shop mentality of management
Job is interesting and can be rewarding, but local management is inexperienced, inconsistent, and unecessarily negative. A sweat shop mentality pervades and talented employees with science degrees (required for the job)are generally treated like cattle. OK job if you understand its not going to be a career with any upward mobility. Good for people right – more... out of college looking for temporary work before they embark on a more serious career path. Pay OK (hourly), but no performance-based raises, no annual reviews, no cost of living adjustments. Long hours in the field under all kinds of weather conditions are also not for everyone. No work (or pay) during inclement weather. – less

Heavy labor job with limited reward
Crew Foreman (Former Employee), New Hampshire – October 17, 2012
Pros: job security based on demand of power company requiring line clearance
Cons: few rewards and bonuses, one of the lowest paying companies in this field of work.
Not a job for everyone. Company rewarded friendship not work ethics. Lazy employees rewarded while others with more ambition were used up and rarely rewarded. Bonuses non-existent and raises had to gained through harassing supervisors. Days were labor intensive giving a great feeling of accomplishment. Storm duty required a great of family time sacrifice – more... that one is required to give up. Salary never matched work requirements or risk level of job. – less
