DHL Global Forwarding can arrange to keep cargo rolling through the land, sailing over the sea, or flying in the air. The company provides freight forwarding services, including customs brokerage, and logistics services, including warehousing and distribution. (As a freight forwarder, DHL Global Forwarding buys transportation capacity from carriers and resells it to customers.) The company is part of the DHL empire, which also includes units that focus on express delivery, supply chain management, and overland transport within Europe. DHL, in turn, is a unit of express delivery and logistics services giant Deutsche Post.
Like most companies within the industry, DHL is targeting Asia as an emerging region ripe for growth. In 2009, its DHL Global Forwarding South Asia Pacific branch secured a new joint venture in Vietnam. The new entity will offer freight forwarding services by road, train, waterways, and air, primarily serving the fashion and apparel industry.
DHL also plans to take advantage of the life sciences and health care sectors, since these industries have stringent safety rules and requirements in place as to how their logistical needs are managed. – less
