Assistant Controller

Job Summary:
D.F. Boiler Tube Industries Inc. and its group of companies are looking for a full time Assistant Controller to join their team. This position is hands-on and responsible for organizing and controlling the day-to-day activities necessary to properly operate the business.
The successful candidate should have strong analytical, technology, communication and organization skills. We prefer applicants who have an accreditation such as Certificated General Accountant (CGA) or Certified Management Accountant (CMA).

Key Responsibilities:

  • Direct daily operations of procurement, accounts receivable (including collection process), accounts payable, fixed assets and cash flow management
  • Ensure adherence to International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) for private enterprise and preparation of monthly financial reports including ad-hoc reporting
  • Prepare financial analysis of operations, variance to budget analysis and Key Performance Indicators (KPI’s)
  • Review and maintain accounting policies and procedures; develop, implement and monitor an appropriate system of internal controls according to the developmental objectives
  • Oversee the accuracy of inventory assets
  • Prepare monthly and balance sheet reconciliations which includes investigating and correcting errors or discrepancies
  • Ensure accurate, timely payroll compilation and preparation for all salaried and hourly employees including expense reimbursements and other personal confidential information
  • Monitor employee vacation and attendance record to ensure paid time off is recorded properly
  • Coordinate the financial aspect of the vendor approval process including credit applications and review invoices
  • Follow up with other departments to ensure all posting, billing and any other required month end close activities are up to date
  • Coordinate the preparation of annual operating and capital budget, financial forecast, inventory dollar levels, budgeting process, planning and internal audit process
  • Review credit limits, credit applications, trade references and recommend appropriate method for credit worthiness in accordance with Export Development Canada policy
  • Responsible for compliance with all federal, provincial, municipal, corporate, payroll, WCB, ROE’s, GST and any other applicable taxes, levies and filing requirements
  • Prepare all reporting requirements to ensure timely submission to all government agencies and financial institutions
  • Ensure all foreign exchange transactions including funds acquisition and loss and gain are recorded accurately
  • Provide support and advice for all departments on matters that affect the accounting system and other relevant company purchases information
  • Additional authority and accountability as related to key responsibilities will be delegated to create a basis for contingency rewards and performance measures upon demonstrated competency

Other Responsibilities:

  • Maintain confidentiality of sensitive documents, adhere to operational and record keeping guidelines
  • Lead by example and help to follow and enforce the company’s Health and Safety Policies and Procedures
  • Attend the required training and focus on continued professional growth and development
  • Assist with interviews and onboarding process for the new employees
  • Provide timely and ongoing communication with the executive team regarding all areas of accountability

Skills and Abilities:

  • Dynamic individual with strong leadership, time management, interpersonal, problem solving and communication skills needed
  • Establish and promote a service oriented “can do” operational philosophy within the department that is both proactive and responsive
  • Proven ability to operate successfully in a demanding environment; demonstrable track record of high performance
  • Attention to detail and high level of accuracy
  • Take initiative where appropriate and follow through on all projects in a timely manner

Experience and Qualifications:

  • Accreditation such as a Certificated General Accountant (CGA) or Certified Management Accountant (CMA)
  • Minimum of 5 years hands-on progressive experience in full-cycle accounting and finance
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office software (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
