As a member of the in-house security, or "Client Services" (Re-branded to avoid pending provincial legislation regarding security licencing), team at Scotia Square Mall and the wider Halifax Developments property I entered a workplace of long-serving, dedicated and experienced staff members leavened by generally eager newer hires. Whilst the department manager is an incompetent, largely useless liar more concerned with appeasing his superiors than the successful function of the department all three supervisors at the time were helpful and well experienced. Co-workers also provided an enjoyable and easy-going workplace environment.
Unfortunately the vast majority of the department was let go in February in favour of a contract security company, sacrificing decades of experience for a cheaper service provided by generally less-than-competent individuals.
It was not a good fit from day one. The environment was toxic for me. Issues in effect prior to my being hired continued and worsened. The enforcement of policies and procedures was inconsistent. Certain behaviours were not addressed and disciplinary measures were not used. Management could not be relied upon. Would never recommend this company to anyone.
Pay and benefits were good. Work environment was unhealthy. Shifts were 12 hours long, for both days and back shifts. The company laid off their entire in house Security team, to save money by hiring a privately contracted company.
Administrative Assistant (Former Employee) – St. John's, Newfoundland – 14 August 2013
Mainly received invoices, collected rent from tenants and deposited to company accounts. I learnt mainly how to work in a different environment and interact with a verity of costumers, from contractors, vendors, clients and consumers. My co-workers were amazing.
