Job Title: Animal Handler
Status: On-call, contract
Hours: 0-40 per week
An Animal Handler delivers fun, informative and safe presentations to groups using exotic and domesticated animals. The Animal Handler works under varying supervision and performs a wide variety of functions in the training, handling and care of animals used for public appearances and contact, such as educational programs, and performs related work as required. Many of Creature Quest’s presentations are held for children in birthday parties, schools, camps, daycares, and all are interactive and hands-on in nature. Animal Handlers are positive role models for children and other guests.
- Responsible the various aspects of animal presentations including, but not limited to:
> Pack up and drive with all equipment and animals to shows in various areas in Ontario in your own vehicle
> Set up and take down in a timely and professional manner
> Conduct fun, interactive and informative presentations for various groups, using correct and age appropriate information
> Supervise safe interactions between animals and participants
> Supervise distribution of promotion materials and handouts
> Answer participant questions accurately in a timely, age appropriate and respectful manner
- Assist in training animals using positive reinforcement and familiarizing animals to human voice and contact
- Assist in providing animals with general care, mental stimulation and physical exercise
- Record keeping as needed
- Other tasks as assigned by company owners
We are looking for mature, enthusiastic, friendly, well groomed applicants. This position also requires a high level of creativity, self-motivation and patience. Applicants must have a valid Ontario drivers’ licence, car insurance and a reliable vehicle with air conditioning and heating. Scheduled work hours will vary and the applicant must be willing to work on call, any day or evening in the week, including in the summer. Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills are necessary. Public speaking experience and English fluency is essential. Previous experience working with children and the general public preferred. Previous knowledge of exotic animal care and natural history, operant conditioning as well as knowledge of native species preferred. The ability or willingness to work safely with and handle a large array of vertebrates and invertebrates is required. Candidates must be to lift and carry up to 50 lbs and work sitting and kneeling on the floor.
Successful applicants are required to submit a clear Criminal Records check and have an up-to-date CPR and First Aid certificate prior to contract signing.
