Position Summary:

Reporting to the Alberta HSE Coordinator, the Junior Health and Safety Advisor is responsible for providing pro-active front line safety support. Ensuring compliance with legislative requirements and company policies/procedures, the Junior Health and Safety Advisor is energetic, motivated and organized. This position works closely with foremen, managers and staff in the Alberta Region.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Act as a strong, positive health and safety presence to maintain our health and safety culture and ensure all employees act in accordance with company policies/procedures and Alberta OH&S legislation
  • Provide ongoing leadership and coaching to personnel in health and safety techniques, current hazard assessments, safe work practices and safety standards while being visible and approachable, with the objective of improving our efficiency and minimizing our losses
  • Assist with the creation, development, review and monitoring of current Safe Work Practices, Hazard Assessments and Work Procedures
  • Assist with near miss, incident and employee complaint investigations, determine trends and root causes, develop corrective action plans and follow up to prevent re-occurrence
  • Assist with health and safety meetings and safety committee meetings by researching topics for discussion, taking meeting minutes, facilitating meetings, and following up on actions items
  • Conduct formal and informal worksite inspections and coordinate with staff to follow up
  • Conduct monthly inspections of the fire and first aid equipment at multiple locations
  • Assist in maintaining the WHMIS program
  • Design and maintain health and safety boards at multiple locations
  • Assist with emergency evacuation drills
  • Transport injured workers to OIS medical clinics and liaise with health care professionals concerning Comco’s modified work program
  • Assist with yearly audits
  • Conduct health and safety orientations when required
  • Perform various administrative tasks

Working Conditions

  • Interacts with employees, management and the public at large
  • Combination of computer, warehouse, office and outdoor work required
  • Ability to conduct safety meetings, safety committee meetings, etc.
  • Lifting or moving up to 50lbs may be required
  • Travel within Edmonton region may be required
  • Overtime may be required

Qualifications:

  • Minimum certification:

oNCSO/MSO certification or equivalent with up to date knowledge of Alberta OH&S Legislation
-Standard or advanced first aid certification
-Valid class 5 driver’s license with a safe driving record
-Current knowledge concerning applicable OH&S legislation, WCB, Alberta PIR and COR

  • Required skills:

-Clear and precise verbal and written communication skills
-Critical thinking skills and the ability to problem solve
-Excellent investigative, administrative, analytical, report writing and record keeping skills
-Must be proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint

  • Previous equipment, warehouse, operations and/or distribution work experience is an asset
