Safety City is a community agency dedicated to serving the personal safety needs of the children in the community and beyond. Our vision of "instilling lifelong safety attitudes" in children was created to help reduce the number and severity of childhood injuries.
Injuries are the number one cause of hospitalization or death in children under the age of 14 years in Canada. Most incidents are both predictable and preventable. Education plays a major role in injury prevention.
The agency acts as an educational resource to provide safety lessons in school classrooms as well as in Safety City's own classrooms on site for students between the ages of 5 and 12. Over 7,000 student contacts are made with each in-school program annually and over 2,000 children practice pedestrian and bicycle safety at the Safety City Training Facility each year. These interactive, comprehensive lessons help to reduce the numbers of preventable injuries and deaths in school-age children.
Our agency was officially incorporated in October 1995, Safety City does not receive annual funding from the City of Lethbridge, school boards or government(s). Corporate donations and support which provided the bulk of our budget have been reduced significantly in recent years. Community involvement and donations are required to maintain sustainability of Safety City.
Safety City survives entirely on donations from the community and receives no sustained funding from the City of Lethbridge, school boards or government. Over the years, we've been able to operate through the vision and generosity of our long term donors.
Agencies like Alberta Transportation and the Lethbridge Regional Police Service once provided traffic safety education in schools in the community. Due to cutbacks and restructuring within these agencies, these resources became unavailable to children. Safety City works to fill that gap. Over the years, Safety City has expanded its programs to include a variety of other types of safety lessons in the Schools and at our facility. – less–ZoomInfo
