Create positive change in regulations by making buildings safer. Become a mechanical building codes expert in the construction of residential and commercial buildings. Through the support and great camaraderie of our team, learn invaluable information about building design/construction codes and regulations. As a Plumbing/Gas Safety Codes Officer I you will:

  • Enforce the Safety Codes Act, National Plumbing Code of Canada, Natural Gas and Propane Installation Code, Alberta Private Sewage Systems Code and other regulated regulations
  • Utilize your technical savvy to interpret articles
  • Guide and consult with Engineers, Designers, Architects, Contractors, Building Owners and Agencies through the permit process
  • Ensure compliance through examining building and mechanical plans, job specifications and technical documents
  • Determine conformity with approved plans and regulations by inspecting buildings
  • Review and follow up on reports of improper plumbing, gas and private sewage equipment
  • Investigate unsafe conditions and consult with person(s) responsible to take necessary action
  • Prepare reports, infractions letters and orders as required

  • Completion of Grade 12, supplemented with a Journeyman Certificate in the Plumber and Gas Fitter trades recognized by the Government of Alberta's Advanced Education and Technology
  • A minimum of 5 years journeyman experience including 3 years in a supervisory capacity in mechanical installations in commercial and residential buildings
  • Registered as a Safety Codes Officer having Plumbing Level 1, Plumbing Level 2 and Gas Level 1 in the Province of Alberta
  • Possession of a valid Province of Alberta Class 5 Motor Vehicle License or operators licensing equivalent recognized by the Operator Licensing and Vehicle Control Regulation, Alta. Reg. 320/2002
  • An original Police Information Check or Certified Criminal Record Check issued within the past 6 months that is satisfactory to the employer will be required before starting in the position. The new hire will be required to obtain this check from Edmonton Police Services or a local RCMP detachment. Please note, this may take up to 3 weeks to process
  • Proficient in data entry, the use of computers and the Microsoft Office Suite
  • Highly developed verbal and written communication skills with the ability to converse with a wide variety of customers and internal resources
  • Ability to interpret, negotiate, and successfully conclude issues around deficiencies, deviations, and violations
  • Considerable knowledge of design methods, techniques, materials, tools and equipment employed in the installation and maintenance of plumbing, gas, and private sewage systems
  • Knowledge of the Safety Codes Act, the National Plumbing Code of Canada, the Natural Gas and Propane Installation Code, and the Alberta Private Sewage Systems Code, City Bylaws and related policies, procedures and regulations
  • Ability to provide excellent customer service and establish and maintain effective working relationships


  • Candidates who do not possess the full Safety Codes Certification may be considered at the Opportunity Concept level
  • Applicants will be required to arrange their own transportation and where appropriate will be reimbursed in accordance with City of Edmonton policy. This may require the applicant to obtain business use auto insurance

Hours of Work: 33.75 hours per week, Monday - Friday. Hours of work may be subject to the terms and conditions of a variable hours of work program

Salary Range: 21M, Salary Grade: 029, $37.909 - $47.643 (Hourly), $66,786.18 - $83,935.06 (Annually). Opportunity Concept Level: 21A, Salary Grade: 013, $28.820 - $37.529 (Hourly), $50,773.64 - $66,116.72 (Annually). The rates quoted are in accordance with a collective agreement between the Union and the City of Edmonton.
