Do you enjoy working outside while helping protect our environment against pests that are harmful to the environment? Join the Forestry Beautification and Environmental Management Section of the Community Services Branch as a Biological Sciences Technical Assistant and be a key contributor in ensuring the City of Edmonton's river valley and parks are maintained for everyone to enjoy!

As a Biological Sciences Technical Assistant you will assist Biological Sciences Technicians with the following:

  • Conducting and developing weed surveys for monitoring weed populations and early detection of invasive species
  • Photographing, collecting, and identifying weed samples from within Edmonton and the Capital region
  • Preparing herbarium specimens of important weed species to build a reference collection at the University of Alberta and a City of Edmonton teaching collection
  • Conducting field assessments and experimental designs to see if integrated pest management techniques including pesticide usage are successful
  • Providing information to and resolving enquiries from the public regarding pest and related disease concerns
  • Assisting in public education programs related to pest and disease concerns, aquatic ecosystems and value of the urban forest
  • Developing and conducting surveys of Integrated Pest Management practices in other Canadian Municipalities
  • Maintaining records, inputting and analyzing data, and assisting in the writing of reports related to the pest management program

  • Completion of related courses in a university degree program in zoological or botanical sciences, or completion of related courses in a two (2) year diploma in biological sciences
  • Previous knowledge or experience in plant identification
  • Ability to manage inclement weather and insects bites and move through various uneven, wet terrain in fields and natural areas
  • Good verbal communication skills for providing information by phone, in person or email to the public about weeds
  • Demonstrated problem solving skills
  • Strong presentation skills
  • Strong written communication skills to prepare technical survey reports
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Must be able to provide own transportation and qualify for business class IV Mileage

Hours of Work: 33.75 hours per week, 8:00 am to 3:30 pm, Monday to Friday. Some evening and weekend work may be required

Salary Range: 21M, Salary Grade: 010, $22.650 - $28.366 (Hourly). The rates quoted are in accordance with a collective agreement between the Union and the City of Edmonton. This union contract is currently under negotiation
