Not a great place to work.
Highway Driver (Former Employee) –  Cambridge, ONJune 7, 2016
At Challenger Motor Freight (CMF) the recruiters will tell you exactly what a driver wants to hear to get them into a truck, but once you are there you will find that the only things that matters are the customer's needs, the runs and the freight. Drivers at CMF are just extensions of the truck or meat in the seat. You will do what they want you to do and if you have concerns or have personal requirements such as home time or not driving overnights, they will make the driver go to great lengths to prove they require the accommodations, and then they will make excuses about not being able to do anything because of seniority. It becomes apparent rather quickly why CMF runs a full orientation class every week; it is not so much a revolving door for recruiting as it is a spinning door.
Communication is really poor, and because they do everything by satellite messaging and email, getting a competent live person on their terrible phone system is almost impossible, even during the day. Equipment is reasonably well maintained, however usually pretty dirty and amenities for drivers are pretty good, but they have expanded well beyond the capacity of their pot-holed dirt and gravel yard and CMF management couldn't care less about it. They are focused on the appearance of being a well-oiled, tightly run ship, but the fact is they don't have enough properly trained, qualified people working in support roles and day to day operations because they don't pay them well enough and really are not committed to making the company better.
The only real benefits that I could see in working for
more... CMF is that for brand new drivers their training program seems to be pretty good, breakdown response is pretty quick, they are busy and benefits start from day 1 for experienced drivers.
Otherwise, I would recommend NOT working for CMF
Benefits from day 1 fro experienced drivers
Poor communication
