Canfor is a story of people, and how two entrepreneurs created an enterprise that grew from a modest beginning to become one of canada’s major forest products companies.
Our roots go back to the late 1930s, when brothers-in-law John G. Prentice and L.L.G. “Poldi” Bentley and their families left their native Austria as the clouds of war gathered over Europe. Only months after settling in Vancouver John and Poldi formed a furniture and paneling veneer company. It grew to become a supplier of
plywood for aviation and marine applications, as well as Douglas Fir plywood, and the mill soon employed 1,000 men and women. A few years later, they laid the foundation for an integrated wood products company by expanding into logging and lumber production. In 1947, everything was consolidated into one operation and Canadian Forest Products was born, from which the name Canfor was derived.
In the early 1950s, the two men moved into the pulp business in British Columbia and had expanded their logging and milling operations into Alberta. Aggressive expansion of timber rights, pulp, lumber and milling operations occurred through the 1960s and 1970s. Family influence remained a driving force and, in 1975, the company’s reins were passed along to the next generation, when Peter Bentley became President and CEO after working in a variety of positions for over 20 years.
Canfor has continued to grow through the acquisition of quality assets and companies. Dimension lumber species now manufactured include Western SPF, Eastern SPF, & Southern Pine. Today Canfor is an integrated softwood lumber producer with the capacity to produce over 5 billion board feet of lumber per year. We are both a diversified wood products company and one of the world’s largest producers of SPF lumber. – less
