Productive and awesome place to work.
Student- IS (Former Employee), Calgary, AB – March 18, 2013
Friendly staff and management. I had a wonderful time working there. I learned how to operate different softwares, Everyone is willing to teach you if you need help. The hardest part of my job was keeping up with some tickets but overall finished them on time. Most enjoyable part of the job was getting to know some of my co-workers. A lot of great people – more... I met. – less

Not that good
Operations (Current Employee), Horizon – March 1, 2013
Pros: fly in fly out to and from edmonton and calgary and a new camp for employees next year
Cons: pay not as good as other sites and all the above
The morale at this place is very low for the most part. Talking with coworkers it appears as though I am not the only one unhappy there. From finger pointing to upper management not taking responsibility for their own decisions, to Micro-management it's not a surprise why we recently had a mass exodus in my department. There are certain positions where – more... your decisions will not be respected and yet when something fails you will bear the blame. – less

I am not afraid to speak the truth about CNRL
Operator (Former Employee), Edson, AB – February 27, 2013
CNRL is a good place to start your career in the oil and gas industry. They will teach you lots and you will get great exposure and then you will be very marketable to REPUTABLE companies that will reward you for your skills and work ethic.

Management is corrupt at all levels and the arrogance is overwhelming. The only long standing employees are people – more... that have never seen the outside world.

It is difficult to achieve any kind of moral when the doors revolve constantly and everyone is continuously looking to find new work.

The pay stinks and their stock is worthless. Don't buy into the empty promises.

I won't even discuss the safety program. They sweep so much under the carpet that sooner or later its going to trip them up big time! – less

Was maitenance person
Maintenance Person (Former Employee), CNRL Horizon – February 21, 2013
I worked there for couple of years in the maintenance department. Micro managed and frontline management is racist. Worst place among oil sands team players.

Interesting work but very poor leadership
Geoscientist (Former Employee), Horizon Mine Site - Fort McMurray – December 2, 2012
Pros: free beverages, interesting geology
Cons: very poor leadership - all the way up the ladder!
I worked for the Horizon team for a few years and thoroughly enjoyed the mine environment. However, the team they assigned to lead the Geology department was very weak - both in technical abilities and leadership skills. I would not recommend working here until the leadership changed. Maybe CNRL's other departments have people with higher skill sets... – more... I hope so! – less

Oppressive work environment with sweatshop attitude.
Team Lead (Former Employee), Ft. McMurray, Calgary – November 2, 2012
Pros: fridays off in summer are earned by working 8 hours per day but being paid for 7.5 hours per day
Cons: typical workdays are way beyond the 7.5 hour paid day.
False incentives lure individuals into a toxic work environment where they are continually mistreated and made to feel inferior.
Short staffed situations exist throughout the company and everyone is made to feel that it's up to them to pick up the slack with little or NO reward or recognition.
Advancement opportunities are few and far between and education – more... and training is purely limited to meeting precise targets, which are never a qualifier for training. – less

Very large company
Area Land Administrator (Former Employee), Calgary, Alberta – October 30, 2012
I found the environment at this company very micromanaged. I worked on a floor with 50 other employees and three managers who did not get along. It was very territorial and the job was very functional. There not enough encouragement to grow. I decided to give it a year and after that I moved on.

High output working enviroment
Reservoir Consultant (Former Employee), Down Town Office, Calgary – October 19, 2012
Pros: strict high output expectation working environment
Cons: not ideal for employee motivation
1 My main assignment was to send out 5 waterflood applications within the one month period.
2 managed to have the 5 applications prepared with all the back up documents attached within the time allowed.
3 During an engineering evaluation of one of the waterflood projects, I had noticed reserves were being swept to a competitor's producer. Management – more... ignore my recomendations but rather just concern to reach his goal of the application aspects and missing the point of losing flood energy and revenue – less

Challenging and Fast-paced, with good benefits
Turnaround Planning Assistant (Former Employee), Fort McKay,AB – October 17, 2012
Pros: good pay, decent camp living
Cons: remote location
Canadian Natural is an oil sands company that employs a large number of services. Working in the Horizon Oil Sands plant gave me the opportunity to experience the oil sands processing first hand and interact with engineers, planners, tradespeople and financial workers. Expectations at this organization are high, so it is always good to try your very – more... best while working here. Great staff, and an excellent learning working environment. – less

productive and fun workplace
Field Operator (Current Employee), Bonnyville, AB – October 8, 2012
I work a ten hour day 8 on 6 off.
I have learned a lot at this job about oil and gas wells and how to always plan ahead and stay organized.
The most enjoyable part of this job is working in the outdoors and always getting to meet new people and learn new things from them.
The hardest part of this job is working outdoors when it reaches -40.

Sweat Shop Operation
Land Department (Current Employee), Calgary, AB – August 29, 2012
Pros: fridays off during the summer
Cons: industry low wages, poor management, limited advancement opportunities
CNRL stands for: Company No one Really Likes.

They pay bottom of the barrel wages. They tell everyone that the Stock Options make up for the low wages, only problem is the Stock has been under-performing for the last 5 years.

Only work for CNRL if you have no other options... Its a revolving door in all the Engineering and Geology teams.

Fun team
Recruitment Marketing (Current Employee), Calgary – June 8, 2012
Pros: pay; progression; access to management
Cons: large company can be quite process driven and resistant to change in some areas
I work in a fun and dynamic team where there is definite opportunity for progression. Management is approachable and provides solid training; I feel I'm able to utilize my creativity and improve my business skills. Sometimes there can be pretty high volume but that's better than being bored.

So so place to work, decent salary but no room for advancement
Heavy Equipment Operator (Current Employee), Fort McMurray – June 2, 2012
Management disconnected from employees. Run like a bad coal mine. Long hours spent in a hot haul truck. employee moral not promoted at work site.
