Camp Kirk is a small residential (overnight) summer camp for children who have Learning Disabilities, AD/HD, Autism Spectrum Disorders, and/or other types of exceptionalities. We strive to empower our campers and raise self-esteem by providing a supportive, nurturing, and non-competitive environment.
THERE ARE THREE TYPES OF POSITIONS AVAILABLE:
1) Cabin Counselor
The role of Cabin Counselor is an important one at Camp Kirk. Counselors are responsible for the emotional and physical well being of the campers in their care, and they are the foundation of a camper’s support system while at camp. In tandem with a co-counselor, individuals hired for this position are expected to create a nurturing and supportive environment that meets the specialized needs of individual children, as well as groups of campers. Co-counselors are assigned a different cabin group each session, therefore there is the possibility to work with any and all ages groups.
2) Program Staff
An individual hired as a ‘program staff’ will be responsible for all aspects of their assigned program area, including planning and facilitations of activities and ordering of supplies. We hire individuals when we are confident in their capabilities, therefore we give our program staff a great deal of independence when it comes to running their program. In addition to their program area, program staff are involved with the planning and facilitation of all-camp activities, evening program, and the overall camp routine and camp life. When available, program staff are assigned to provide extra support to either individual campers or cabin groups who require it.
The following is a list of Program Staff positions:
Ropes & Leadership
Arts & Crafts
3) Support Staff
Quite often individual campers, or a cabin group as a whole, require extra support. This is where the role of support staff is important. Support staff are assigned to whatever area of camp that requires extra attention, time or manpower. In addition to providing support to campers, support staff are expected to participate and contribute to the planning and facilitation of the overall camp routine, programming and camp life.
The camp is located outside of Kirkfield, Ontario on Highway #48 between Lindsay and Orillia, approximately 1 1/2 hours from Toronto. The dates of employment run from June 17th until August 23rd, 2014. All staff members reside at camp and Room and Board is provided over and above the salary. The salary for each position varies from approximately $2,500 to $3,500, depending on the position and the individual’s experience and qualifications.
