Calgary Laboratory Services (CLS) is a medical diagnostic laboratory that offers a full range of laboratory services to Calgary and parts of Southern Alberta. Every year more than two thousand physicians access our services to help diagnose, treat and monitor their patients' health.
Through our community collection sites, mobile services, and hospital laboratories, we serve over a million people each year and perform approximately 21 million tests annually.
We invest in the future of healthcare by providing training programs for tomorrow's laboratory professionals, and by taking an active role in medical research through the development of improved methods of disease detection, and new drugs and therapies.
From collecting blood samples to developing new treatments for patient care, we play an important role in the delivery of healthcare.
The majority of all clinical treatment decisions are based on results from laboratory tests. The Data Team at Calgary Laboratory Services uses this data to support business needs, assist researchers, and sustain public health surveillance efforts. As a wholly-owned subsidiary of Alberta Health Services, the CLS Data Team also has responsibility for provincial reporting and business intelligence, including ownership of the provincial laboratory data repository.
Reporting to the Data Team Supervisor, the Data Analyst is responsible for managing existing and developing new performance metrics on a provincial level. This includes creating data extracts for Lean Six Sigma projects, productivity, workload, process improvement, research, and data comparisons. This person works closely with clients at all organizational levels to support Data requests to meet internal and external reporting requirements.
The Data Analyst must be able to distill technical, business and clinical data into relevant reports, using strong visualization techniques to design and present clear information to stakeholders at all levels of both Calgary Laboratory Services and Alberta Health Services.
Additionally, the Data Analyst interprets ad-hoc information requests and uses a diverse skill set to assess requirements and provide meaningful information in support of a variety of complex informational needs. The Data Analyst must understand the complex and diverse needs of operational and clinical stakeholders, and work closely with internal and external clients at all organizational levels.
Works closely with local and provincial Laboratory Services leaders to manage existing as well as create new templates, tools, and reports to support ongoing data needs, and the development and monitoring of Performance Measures and related Performance Metrics.
Synthesizes, aggregates and validates data from distinct sources to support ongoing reporting and the development of local and provincial performance metrics.
Contributes to the realization of ad-hoc data requests by:
o Performing needs assessments and defining data requirements
o Assembling and translating performance data into information/reports utilized for decision making purposes
o Analyzing information to identify trends
o Auditing data sources and making recommendations for improving data quality.
o Being able to perform meaningful analysis with large data sets
Documents standard operating procedures for applications\databases developed.
Maintains various electronic filing systems and preexisting databases to ensure integrity of retained information.

Key Skills and Aptitudes
University degree, diploma or demonstrable expertise in business, business intelligence, computing sciences, or related field.
Minimum of 3-5 years of related experience, preferably in a medical/health environment.
Proven problem solving and statistical skills, with knowledge of business intelligence best practices considered an asset.
Experience and/or familiarity with Business Intelligence tools (Informatica, Tableau, Oracle) and/or knowledge of Laboratory Information Systems (Cerner Millennium/Classic, Sunquest, Meditech) data and query tools an asset.
Ability to interpret end-user data needs, acquire and merge data sets for comprehensive reporting, validate data and design reports to meet requirements.
Lean/Six Sigma project experience is an asset.
Experience with quality assurance/total quality improvement concepts, tools and techniques including quality/performance measurements and indicator reporting
Standard Query Language (SQL) programming skills and relational database knowledge.
Experience with VB6, VBA, VB.Net, C#.Net an asset.
Proficiency in database design, implementation, maintenance, querying and analysis environments, including but not limited to Oracle DBMS, Microsoft Access, Excel and Minitab.
Expert proficiency with full Microsoft Office suite required.
Familiarity with legislation, policies and procedures regarding the reporting and disclosure of health information an asset.
Strong client focus with proven ability to effectively consult and collaborate with a variety of clients and management levels to achieve business needs and goals.
Strong organizational, verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to design effective, accurate and user-friendly reports and documentation.
Able to work in a fast-paced environment and demonstrated ability to meet tight deadlines.
Capable of working independently and in teams, demonstrating ownership of assigned responsibilities.
