Logic and structure are key to the delivery of personalized, variable communications. At Blue North, we’re experts in this field.
The Variable Communications Technician (Tech) is the person who makes it happen. Central to the role is to translate project requirements from the client and Project Manager into technical specifications. The Tech reviews project proposals, reviews creative briefs and attends project meetings to understand what a project is trying to accomplish and understand the logic that will be required (and will need to be checked at the end of the process). The Tech oversees implementation of solutions, using our internal technologies and/or outside vendors. Sometimes this involves figuring out the complicated little details of a variable piece, but the impulse is always to find the simplest path to the goal, and to use our tech¬nology platform (White Page Live) and other existing solutions, wherever possible.
In a nutshell, the Tech owns the delivery of variable print jobs, emails, and other jobs of a technical nature. They also own all of the project specification documents, most of which are simply generated from the technology platform itself, but some of which they may be create “manually” — typically with Word or Excel. They own accuracy of our deliverables - proofreading client work to ensure that everything sent to clients is correct.
Often communications projects involve multiple channels (e.g. print and email) that share common data, and/or variability. The Tech owns coordinating the data and technologies to ensure that the channels work well together. The Tech works out these details with the platform team and/or external vendors.
As the person who most frequently interacts with White Page Live, the Tech is aware of opportunities to improve the platform for everyone and recommends these improvements.
As the person who most frequently interacts with external technology vendors, the Tech continuously reviews their service offerings, discussing ways to improve processes or use of new technologies, in coordination with the VP Technology.
> Actively direct, in coordination with the client team Account Manager and Project Manager, the definition of the technical requirements of deliverables, focusing on the desired variability, in order that the project is informed by data availability constraints and scope of effort to achieve the desired variability
> Meet with clients, as required, to understand and guide the variability and data work, coordinating with client data specialists on details such as file formats, scheduling of regular deliveries, means of delivery, etc.
> Receive and process client data
o Understand and perform required data transformations, leveraging existing processes, code and technology implemented by the platform team
> For variable print pieces, ensure the accurate input of content and variability requirements into White Page Live, coordinating with the Project Manager to draw in other resources for support in entering content as appropriate; oversees the production of project output and delivery to print vendors as required
> For digital deliverables being implemented by vendors, work with the Project Manager to ensure that the vendors have the technical information they require
> Assist the rest of the client team in the delivery of custom client technical solutions (e.g. portals, data collaboration tools, reports, web properties, etc.) including the definition of technical requirements, working with the platform team and/or external vendors, as required, to coordinate technical solutions so as to minimize duplication of effort
> Collaborate with the platform team, to support efforts towards generalized solutions, to ensure re-use of processes, programming and technologies, while understanding that the overall platform direction, including new features, will be driven by the platform team and the technical architecture will be driven by the VP Technology
> Ensure quality of all output. Also coordinate with the Project Manager as to the use of additional QA resources, as demand requires, giving direction to, and supervision of, these resources.
