Relief Child Care Worker

Currently, Bissell Centre is looking for the right individual to fill the position of Relief Child Care Worker. The Childcare Worker is responsible for creating and developing an environment that meets the individual social, physical, intellectual and emotional needs of children aged infant to six years.

Specific responsibilities of the position include:

  • Ensure all play and learning activities are conducted in a safe and healthy atmosphere
  • Implement the “Learning Through Play” philosophy in day-to-day programming
  • Develop activities that consider each child’s individual interests and developmental levels
  • Develop activities that enhance self-esteem and encourage children’s independence, social interaction and creativity
  • Establish rapport and trust with children and parents/caregivers
  • Adapt or modify activities to enable children with special needs to participate
  • Speak with caregivers about parenting issues and share information about child development, when appropriate
  • Develop monthly program flow charts and daily and weekly activity charts
  • Refer participants to internal and external resources when appropriate
  • Liaise and develop with ECDRW steps to assist children/parents to access early intervention
  • Maintain accurate written file notes, computer records, program information, and critical incident reports within established time standards
  • Perform other duties as require

The ideal candidate would possess the following qualifications:

  • Level 1, 2 or Level 3 certification/2 years Early Childhood Development Diploma (from accredited college)
  • Minimum 6 months’ related working experience
  • Professional memberships e.g. ACCA, NAEYC
  • Familiarity working with children affected by behavioural and/or developmental delays

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Strong listening and verbal communication skills with children, parents/caregivers and ECD staff
  • Good written and oral communication, interpersonal and teamwork skills.
  • Good working knowledge of possible signs of abuse/neglect
  • Good working knowledge of Daycare Licensing Standards, ITERS and ECKERS, and accreditation
  • Excellent knowledge of community resources pertaining to children’s health and education needs
  • Familiarity with issues of poverty and Edmonton’s urban core
  • Must be able to lift and carry approximately 30 lbs (13.5 kg)

Salary : $14.00 per hour
Hours of Work: No fixed working hours per week. Depend on when need basis with prior notification.
