Currently, Bissell Centre is looking for the right individual to fill the position of Cross Trained Intake Worker. The Worker provides essential emergency supports to help those living in poverty meet their daily basic needs, employability and improve their quality of life. This includes providing a safe and supportive environment for participants to access essential supports and services. Supports can include crisis intervention, advocacy, outreach assistance, referrals, providing vouchers, assistance with filling out forms, or referrals to internal or external resources, and provide administrative support to programs.

The Worker will be required to support a number of programs within the Centre.

Specific responsibilities of the position include:
Program Duties

  • Provide crisis intervention support as required
  • Engage participants in purposeful conversation
  • Work collaboratively with participants to set goals, develop a service plan and provide follow-up on achievement of established goals
  • Answer promptly and courteously all incoming phone calls and process immediate concerns to ensure immediate social and emotional support is provided.
  • Make appropriate referrals to health and community services and, when necessary, advocate for participants to receive those services
  • Provide baby supplies when appointments have been scheduled
  • Provide employment program intake and assessments at specific times during the week
  • Perform morning Casual Labour duties; including dispatch, secondary dispatch, the call back office and the monitoring of participants
  • Monitor activities and participants behaviors in the Robert Tegler Friendship Room (RTFR) and enforce agency policies and procedures as required
  • Assist with other program activities and events as required

General and Administrative

  • Maintain accurate written file notes, computer records, program information, and critical incident reports within established time standards
  • Provide program information and statistics as required
  • Participate in probationary and annual performance reviews
  • Attend scheduled staff and supervision meetings

The ideal candidate would possess the following qualifications:

  • Bachelor Degree or Diploma in Social Work or equivalent
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Effective assessment skills and motivational interviewing
  • Knowledgeable about community resources and health services
  • Ability to establish rapport and trust with the participants
  • Strong ability to advocate
  • Strong problem solving skills and ability to prioritize and multi-task
  • Ability to be self-directed and work well within a team
  • Knowledgeable about Child Welfare Act and Supports For Independence
  • Familiarity with issues of poverty and Edmonton’s urban core
