Flexible workplace with guitars in the staff room
English Instructor (Former Employee), JPE – December 10, 2012
Pros: flexible schedule
Cons: few hours in the winter season
A workday at Berlitz usually consisted of arriving, picking up the files of the students to be taught that day, lesson preparation, subsequent lesson delivery while waiting for the next student between classes.

I learned to be flexible and work in an environment where there were teachers from several different countries.

My Instructional Supervisor – more... was very competent and was willing to schedule me around my hours of availability. We aroked well together to solve issues that arose.

My co-workers, coming from all areas of the globe, each brought their own understanding of how everything worked. They were a lot of fun in the staff room as well.

The hardest part of the job was teaching those that did not want to be taught and were only there because their bosses told them to be there.

The most enjoyable part of the job was being with my colleagues. Many of them had interesting personalities. – less

Hope managment has changed
ESL Instructor (Former Employee), JPD – May 25, 2012
Pros: varied working conditions
Cons: western managers-supervisors
This is for Berlitz Japan. The job itself was good, however; the Western managers we had were terrible. They would do things that would be illegal in our home countries but because we were in Japan, they felt exempt from the law. The Japanese staff were great and honest and were a pleasure to work with.

Excellent Work Environment
English/French Instructor, CSR (Current Employee), Ottawa, ON – May 9, 2012
Pros: flexible schedules, rewarding experience, excellent work environment.
Cons: unreliable hours.
Teaching at Berlitz is a rewarding experience. Teachers arrive before their class, review the student file, and prepare for class. This job has helped me develop excellent interpersonal and problem solving skills. The management is very approachable and does whatever they can to help you. My co-workers are very friendly, and I have become close with – more... a number of them. The hardest part of the job is teaching a student that is taking language training because it is required for their job. Most students are excited to learn a language, but some see it as a waste of time. The challenge in this is to find a way to make the lesson interesting for them while still teaching. The most enjoyable part is seeing the progress that students make and how happy they are about it. – less

Sales/ Branch Manager (Current Employee), Karachi, Pakistan – April 25, 2013
Its 10:00 a.m in the morning my work at Berlitz Starts right away when I enter my office and there is a Student who is in some kind issue related to course and seeking my help want to discuss with me or there is a customer who was appointed and waiting for me so i came into my Office and greet them and take them along with me into my room.
That's how – more... my day usually starts.
Then i Have more customers line up and appointed for career counseling and that where i have to not just Sell my Courses but also have to understand my customer needs, affordability and availability and then suggest the best options for them.
and yes that's from where i Achieve my targets and generate revenue for my Company.
I m on customer Service every time anybody can st an appointment to meet me or come in to my room directly when i am free other wise leave a message which i have to follow up the Same day.In the mean while i will have to have a small meeting with my Sales Staff and get there review and suggestions or answer there problems.
I have to some time address the Instructors Issues whenever the are forwarded to me and then resolve it or forward it to the Higher management.
Then i have to check my emails and reply to them and also check and update the Sales collection reports and Sales forecast and send it to my Management before ending my day.
Its 09:00 p.m in the evening i am leaving my Office and going to the my Home via my Gym.

I have Learned a lot from Berlitz, What I am today there is a lot of contribution of Berlitz in my Professional Skill Developments.
The Management is understanding in most of the times with having a Great vision for the Organization.
Co-workers are Awesome and there is a strong Bond between us.
Hardest Part of the Job is most Enjoyable as well, where we have to Achieve our Sales Targets and Giving out our best to get closer or achieving our Personal or Branch targets. Its a wonderful feeling to get recognition and Appreciation on you Achievements. – less

great job if it's not your only one
English Language Instructor (Current Employee), New York, NY – March 18, 2013
Pros: great people, flexible work hours
Cons: terrible pay, no guaranteed work schedule, no benefits
If this place is your primary source of income, then you're going to not be able to support yourself at all! I used this place solely for teaching experience. There are no pay incentives, you have no set schedule, and sometimes weeks can pass before you have a class. The people who work there are nice, but I wouldn't recommend working there!

Culturally rich, ever-changing atmosphere!
Instructor (Current Employee), San Diego, CA – March 9, 2013
Pros: prepared lesson plans! great colleagues and students, nice office space
Cons: pay, benefits; disorganized, somewhat outdated materials
I've enjoyed my job teaching English with Berlitz, and I love all the cultures represented by our students; it's really fascinating! You never know, emerging from your classroom, how many or which languages you'll hear in the hallways or kitchen/break area, or how many languages a given conversation will go through!
I enjoy my teaching colleagues and – more... the management team. It's small enough to be comfortable. Also, our students are among the bennies of our job; almost without exception, they're interesting and wonderful people to get to know.
In the Cons column, the pay is way too low for professionals; $13.66/hr. There are virtually no benefits unless you have another source of income and can afford to purchase the insurances offered for part-timers with a lot of hours. Work is on-call, and for me, at least, varies from 0 hours per week to 20+.
I enjoy my job, but am constantly on the lookout for something else to 'supplement' my work hours and income. – less

Sure beats pumping gas in Japan.
teacher (Current Employee), Tokyo – March 6, 2013
Pros: some schools provide average coffee
Cons: no job security
I would only recommend Berlitz for teachers in Japan only if you have no other options.

Perhaps it has to do with the recent claims of racism at Berlitz. I did witness such problems on numerous occasions over a few years with a notoriously racist manager.

Berlitz's problems are mostly management related. The LC managers have little management experience – more... and are mostly ill-equipped to deal with running businesses. They are usually promoted in house and their function is mostly to rubber stamp whatever comes from head office.

The most important thing to remember with Berlitz is that they try to get rid of staff without any severance pay and the company has often broken Japanese Labour Law in the past.

Thankfully Begunto (Japanese teacher Union) won a big labour case against them recently.

If you do decide to work for Berlitz, definitely join the union. – less

Multicultural workplace
Tagalog Language Instructor (Current Employee), Washington, DC – February 21, 2013
Pros: the opportunity to learn other languages for free
Cons: not enough work
The opportunity to learn other languages for free as well as be able to showcase my skills as an Instructor is good although there is not much of a need for a Tagalog or ESL Instructor at the moment. My job is on an on-call basis.

Interaction with students was the best part
Local Instructional Supervisor (Former Employee), San Juan, PR – December 26, 2012
During my six year tenure as Instructional Supervisor I acquired a myriad of new skills, including: instruction of groups and private students, learning and implementing different teaching techniques, on boarding process of new instructors, from interviewing and training to monitoring classes to ensure students expectations were met. I had the chance – more... of working with exceptionally intelligent people that were truly devoted to making the students learning experience a pleasant and stimulating one. The highlight for me as well as the other instructors was being able to participate on the student's sense of achievement when they overcame difficult linguistic hurdles. – less

Highly cultural atmopshere
Instruction Supervisor (Former Employee), Pasadena,Califronia – October 25, 2012
Pros: friendly atmoshphere
Cons: salary and benefits unsatisfactory
It was a good working place doing what I like best and speaking English and my native language French. And that in spite of the not so satisfactory compensation and benefits, I really stayed there, not for the money, but for the other aspects of the job occupied.

I was rewarded a "Teacher of the year 2002" award and a "Certificate of rrecongnition" – more... for excellent service which will remain on record and diplayed at home. – less

A culturally diverse setting with an opportunity to grow
Instructor (Former Employee), Jiyugaoka – July 7, 2012
Pros: the opportunity of working with various age groups
Cons: short breaks between classes
A typical work day involved teaching eight 45-minute classes within either a one-to-one or group setting; adults or children; between the hours of 1pm-9pm at one main language center or at a different language center as needed. I learned to be very flexible and easy-going at all times as my setting and interactions with people could shift at any given – more... moment. I had the opportunity to manage children's classes in terms of bringing in ideas to creatively make language-learning fun. My co-workers came from diverse countries and exemplified English pronunciation and accents to help students develop an ear for the spoken language. The hardest part of my job was having to work on weekends as most social activities with friends took place during this time. The most enjoyable part of my job was seeing that students enjoyed their classes and attained their goals. – less

Arabic Teacher (Former Employee), Washington, DC – April 12, 2012
Very pleasant working days. I learnt how to transmit information accurately and effectively to people from different backgrounds and ages. It was a bit hard when I started the job, but I was able to quickly learn the necessary teaching methods that made my job very enjoyable and productive. I like to see how people are improving their language and knowing – more... more about the Arab culture. – less

Fun and rewarding job
Language & Culture Instructor (Former Employee), Rockville, MD – March 20, 2012
It is impossible to call this job a career. Although you are certainly a teacher, there is a chance that you might not work full time. However, it is a very fun and rewarding job. Seeing how your students improve over time is impressive. At first I was skeptical about going into teaching (both my parents are teachers) and I swore myself not to become – more... a teacher, but Berlitz really made teaching enjoyable. – less
