Bechtel is a great place to work. The corporation has high expectations and provides education and advancement opportunities galore.

The people are professional and the atsmophere – more... is friendly and engaging. All-in-all, you won't find a better place to exercise your skill set. – less

Make sure you do DEEP research about the ethics culture of the company
IM (Former Employee), Asia Pacific – January 7, 2013
Pros: there are a minority of excellent, supportive managers.
Cons: a career destroyer if you get the wrong project / individual.
I think anyone in a senior position within this company (other than the VP's etc) would struggle to recommend it to recent graduates they care for. This company kills careers, with impunity.

They preach ethics, but in my experience, they don't practice them - you're required to go to ethics training at least once a year, and you're told over and over – more... again that management will support you if you report an ethics problem - the core message is 'if you wouldn't like to see it on the front page of the New York Times, report it'. This doesn't appear to be supported by my experience. At the core, my opinion is that this company is a seething nepotistic hotpot of moral and ethical corruption. Thing deeply about your options before associating yourself with this company - I believe it is a sick company.

Just one example of what I personally experienced - on one recent project, I was directly instructed to break the law of the country (to maintain schedule) by a very senior manager - he was a 'Bechtel Veteran', and had been involved at a very high level, for many years, in the lucrative middle east operations of the company.

I (carefully and sensitively) informed this person that what he was asking me to do was breaking the law and that I had a less expensive and more suitable solution in any case. He yelled at me to stop being obstructive (in front of my colleagues) and then I was taken aside, my office door closed and he preceded to berate me and not-so-subtly threaten to 'have my career' unless I did what he asked.

I reported the incident and the circumstances, along with a mountain of supporting email background to HR and my senior managers. Nothing was done - I heard NOTHING further. For the remainder of the project, I was belittled, berated, bullied and badgered, to the extent that it had serious consequences upon my health.

I stuck with the project, did the right thing (ignoring the break-the-law instruction) and got them in ahead of schedule, legally. I wanted to show them that I had the best interests of the company at heart, and would pull out all the stops to 'make it happen'.

At the completion of the project I was told that I'd been given a withering 'exit review' by the subject project manager. My colleagues were provided with plum roles in other OS projects, I was offered a role below my pay grade and experience and 'managed out' of the organisation.

Did I take legal action? No - I didn't think I'd have to as I'd done the right thing and would be supported. I met with senior management, recounted the stories and asked them to 'make it right'. They did nothing. With the documented health impacts, documented coercion and absolutely blatant bullying I experienced, I had solicitors salivating over my case. I didn't sue - I thought they'd 'come good' - they didn't. Maybe one day I may take it further.

I suspect this pattern is repeated often within the organisation, only I suspect many take it further and get an early retirement. The organisation doesn't like controversy.

As for me? Well, I haven't been able to get a job in the industry with a large organisation since - message number two - I suspect they have the ability to destroy your career - and will if you encounter the wrong people. Read about ERMS.

Your experience may differ, but let it be known that if you get the wrong project, you may find your hard earnt reputation and career held in the palm of an incompetent or outright despicable, hand.

I was recruited midway through a high performing, high potential academic program with promises of interesting, diverse projects and an international career, instead I've dealt with a lot of 'wrong headedness' and bad behavior, and been dealt a career ending blow after years of loyal service.

I'll keep subtly letting folks know about the dangers of working for this company until such time as my fortunes change, justice is done or they start actually abiding by the 'Bechtel Covenants'. – less

Proofreaders, Not Editors
Senior Technical Writer/Editor (Current Employee), Houston, TX – January 2, 2013
The Publications department at Bechtel Houston OG&C provides a veritable "feast or famine" workload. There have been typical stretches during which one must find tasks to perform just to stay busy. However, when the work does come in, one is occasionally required to stay well into the evening. While the title may state "editor," the job is more about – more... proofreading and formatting. – less

Great place to work for those who are flexible.
Engineer Grade 23 (Current Employee), Spring City, TN – December 30, 2012
Pros: great pay, excitement
Cons: constant movement between jobsites
Bechtel is an excellent place to work and gain experience in a plethora of different fields and be able to see the entire breath of their projects from design, to construction, and to completion. However, maintaining a lifestyle not devoted to work is difficult considering the need to move when there is work available.

Miserable place to work.
Engineer (Former Employee), Frederick, MD – December 5, 2012
Typical day at work: Management sits at the door monitoring people, noting who isn't sitting at their desk at 7:30 am. You sit in a cubical for one with a cube mate. Crunch numbers until something changes, then you crunch them again. The office itself sucks. It's a drab stalk yard of engineers with little resources. Supplies are scares. Software is – more... shared. Little to no conveniences for the employee.

What I learned: Nepotism. I also learned what I do not want to do in life, and that I had made a poor carrier choice with Bechtel.

Management: Great baby sitters. Working for Bechtel in the last 4 yrs has become more of an adult daycare, rather than a enjoyable place to work. They do a poor job and completing projects to the clients wants and needs. Hence, little repeat business and the current mess they are in. This view is shared by the majority of employees, and it showed in the Great Place To Work employee survey.

Co-workers: There are a lot a great people that work at Bechtel. But the majority is "office friendly." Nice to your face, but like all big business, will undercut you in a heartbeat.

Hardest part of the job: Working very hard and producing quality work only to have it not implemented. Working at Bechtel sucked my will to live. Getting up in the morning to go to such a dismal place was nearly impossible to do.

Most enjoyable part of the job: The few good friends I made. Other than that, there was little to no enjoyable parts that come to mind. – less

Great Place to Work if You are Willing to Travel
Training Manager - Angola LNG Project (Former Employee), Houston, TX – November 14, 2012
Pros: the basement cafeteria in houston is super - fine service - fine food - 3 times per day
Cons: there is a lot of work, and not the adequate personnel on board, to support, resulting in an aging workforce, starting to get better but the average population is still close to or over 40.
Challenging and Fun when You are on a Project - somewhat mundane in the Home Office

Learned? A lot about foreign countries - Angola - Phillipines - Thailand and their cultures

Management - fine as long they are from the ranks - those that come in to management from other companies can be somewhat wanting.

Learning the functions of the various divisions – more... and how they contribute to the bottom line.

Travel – less
