Deadline: 5:00pm on July 2, 2013

Beakerhead Creative Society is the organizing team at the heart of an annual movement that culminates in a five-day spectacle bringing together the arts and engineering sectors to build, engage, compete and exhibit interactive works of art, engineered creativity and entertainment. The society’s activities at the provincial, national and international level are coordinated by a core secretariat located in Calgary, Alberta.

Starting September 2013, and annually after that, Beakerhead will be a five-day citywide, highly participatory event that explodes in Calgary’s major educational institutions, arts and culture venues, on the streets and in communities.

Beakerhead transforms Calgary – with contests, mechanical sculpture gardens, robot fashion shows, interactive street art, feats of engineering, larger-than-life theatre, and spectacular performances.

Roles and Responsibilities

As Education and Outreach Coordinator, you will have the unique opportunity to build and foster a network of people and programs focused on creative learning opportunities that engage artists, engineers, scientists, entrepreneurs, students, educators, inventors and more.

Reporting to the Director of Programs, you will help develop, shaping and implement the coordinated suite of education-related activities that make up Beakerhead – including liaising with school districts, principals and teachers to coordinate trips and tours and in-school programs; post-secondary engagement and community workshop and mentorship programs – all in the name of creating inspiring, hands-on experiences that merge art, science and engineering.

Beakerhead programming falls into two primary categories: elements produced by partners, and elements produced directly by the Beakerhead secretariat. Reporting to the Director of Programs, you will be assigned to help coordinate the overall picture of program elements that are produced by program partners. This position will:

-- Initiate, develop and maintain relationships with key educational institutions, school boards and community associations.
-- Develop and implement programs and events within schools, the six surrounding school districts, and youth through their family communities.
-- Work with the programming team to invite students to selected Beakerhead events.
-- Arrange bussing and permissions for student audiences involved with Beakerhead.
-- Build and maintain fantastic relationships with education and community program partners and provide assistance and guidance to them, as needed.
-- Play on-site role during Beakerhead events, which includes considerable evening and weekend hours during peak periods.
-- Coordinate and support year-round events, as required, to build the education and community programs that culminate each year in the annual event.
-- Support the coordination of Speakerhead events, the educational elements of Beakerhead programming (presentations and workshops).
-- Attend all planning meetings.

Qualifications
-- Strong project coordination skills in education and community sectors
-- Strong verbal and written communications skills
-- Understanding of Calgary’s educational and family communities, with a particular interest in multidisciplinary hands-on learning. Existing contacts within these institutions is an asset.
-- Ability to work with a team as well as individually
-- Comfortable with arts/culture and science/engineering
-- Ability to work within a fast-paced environment of a newly launched organization
-- Enthusiasm and a positive attitude
-- Willingness to embrace original and creative event programming culture
-- A desire to build amazingness!
