ASSISTANT CAMP DIRECTOR

Located on Jacob’s Island, Pigeon Lake in the Kawarthas, Banyan’s Camp Maple Leaf is a residential summer camp experience for kids who would benefit the most from growing and learning while having fun, enjoying nature, making new friends and lasting memories. Camp Maple Leaf receives referrals from a range of social service organizations including the Canadian Armed Forces, Children’s Aid Societies, Big Brother/Big Sister, Boys’ and Girls’ Clubs, etc.
The duration of this summer position is from June 3, 2013 to August 25, 2013. Applicants must love camp, enjoy working with young people and have strong leadership skills. Lengthy stretches of 24 hour days dealing with Campers with high behaviour needs.
The Assistant Camp Director receives accommodations at Camp, all meals, a competitive salary and a fantastic summer experience!
The Assistant Camp Director position is normally a 3 month position which includes providing training to the staff, and planning for the LIT and CIT programs prior to the start of camp.
Assist the Camp Director to monitor and actively supervise to ensure day-to-day operation in a safe and supportive manner enhancing individual and group strengths and maximizing potentials while supporting effective execution of the program model.
Be a positive Role Model and leader for campers and staff in all facets of Camp life by maintaining a strong visible presence.
Plan and oversee the implementation of the Leadership Programs, both LIT and CIT.
Daily participation in leadership staff meetings.
Assist Section Heads and Counselling staff with camper behavior issues.
Ensure proper procedures are followed for out-trips. Check in with staff on out-trips regularly.
Actively supervise all assigned staff members, identifying strengths and weaknesses. Conduct staff evaluations mid and end work term, with support from Program Coordinator, providing continuous support to staff, Administrative duties as required.
Assist the Director to conduct weekly drills for response to fire, missing camper and other emergencies.
Assist with boat transportation to and from the island.
On-call AT ALL TIMES and for arrival and departure days, from the first pick up time, until the last drop off is completed, shared with Camp Director.
General cabin clean-up.
Conduct tours for CAS agencies, accreditation requirements, public health as well as those required for promotion and marketing of the camp.
Follow up and communicate with parents and/or Guardians of campers when necessary
University /College student with preference given to those pursuing a career in Recreation/Sports Management Field. Prior experience in residential camping preferred.
Previous leadership and supervision experience
Bronze Med / Cross. National Life Saving (NLS) certificate is an asset
Current First Aid / CPR –preference given to those candidates holding the Wilderness First Aid Certification
Driver’s Licence is an asset
Pleasure Craft Operator card (PCOC) and Small Vessel Commercial License (SVCL) is a requirement for this position
Propane Handling Certificate is an asset
Computer skills, including Microsoft Office Suite and Outlook
Prior experience in residential camping preferred
Strong leadership, interpersonal and organizational skills.
Criminal Records/Vulnerable Sector Check required two (2) months prior to commence of work term at staff’s own expense
