IT Risk Analytics - Process Improvement and Project Management
Sr. Data Security Lead and Liaison / PM Admin III (Former Employee), Pittsburgh, PA – March 13, 2013
Pros: used my ba information systems education and skills
Cons: productivity with no personable contact
Started as a Data Security Coordinater and progressed to a Sr. Data Security Coordinator facilitating meetings and teaching other data security coordinators new and revised processes and procedures and later progressing to a Project Admin III / PM 1.
Worked with project teams using the following skills: collaboration, team facilitation, and project – more... management. Worked on small 600 hr projects, using Microsoft Project, Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Since team members were located domestically and internationally conference calling and Webex meetings brought the team together to accomplish/track tasks target dates and resolve issues. Held weekly status meetings and provided status updates and reported resource tasks, hrs estimated, allocated and worked. Reported to stakeholders monthly.

Over the 7 year period I learned their SDLC process which followed what my education provided. Worked with team members to collaborate and resolve issues. Met target dates and worked with stakeholders.

Management provided little to no feedback or assistance.

Co-workers kept information to themselves instead of passing forward to increase productivity and collaboration.

The lack of collaboration with other co-workers within and outside our department in order to get the job done expeditiously. – less

Mutual Funds Custody Administrator (Former Employee), Lake Mary, FL – March 10, 2013
Pros: great benefits
Cons: no room for creativity
A typical day would be check and verify cash balance projection, report daily for accuracy and completeness, follow-up on customer inquiries, and Resolve daily differences in portfolio settlements with customers and Securities Processing. I had three managers to report to and it was great to work with them.
The hardest part of the job was working in – more... the office all day. I did not like sitting behind my desk all day. Working with my team made my job most enjoyable. – less

Definitely feels like working for 'The Man'
Accounting/Operations (Former Employee), PA – March 9, 2013
Pros: decent time off
Cons: cold/uncaring management - low pay - little recognition
Just finally left the company and here's why:

Very bland/boring/cold environment and culture. You definitely feel like you're working for the stereotypical evil mega-corporation.

Employees are treated poorly. Day-to-day work is mind-numbing, but not completely horrible. The real abuse is mostly done at a broader level. Management is cold and has a – more... 'sneaky' way of doing things. They also withold any information possible from lower employees, seemingly trying to prevent their subordinates from learning more and threatening their jobs. Constant fears/rumors of layoffs due to outsourcing...and because it actually happened to a few departments.

My biggest complaint though, without a doubt, is the pay. The only way to get a decent salary increase is via either promotion or position change. Standard annual raises are laughable. Promotions are difficult to get (even though most of them are simple 'level increases' rather than a real promotion) so you're best shot is to constantly hop around. Regardless of how stellar your annual review is, or how many kudos you get from your bosses, you'll get the same lousy pay as the guy next to you that does half as much work. *Bonus* Last year the company said in an email that annual raises had to be "temporarily" delayed from April until July to help conserve capital and was supposed to be a one-time deal. But, surprise - it's in effect again for this year, and it wasn't even officially announced...I guess they think no one will notice. Same deal with the 401k matching...they trimmed that down a couple of years ago and never brought it back up. Meanwhile, the company's share price has increased substantially and dividends (profits) are high.

Despite all of the negatives, there's a few small bright spots. It's an ok place to get your foot wet for a little financial experience. The time off is pretty decent. Good selection of funds to choose from in your 401k. – less

overall I give this company a 2
Full time employee (Former Employee), Westborough, MA – March 5, 2013
The company is very Wall St., as to be expected when dealing with a mutual fund transfer agent. However, on the side of compassion for their workers, I give them a less then admirable rating. I worked for this company for 14 years, ( it changed hands from bank to bank a few times during my employment) They are NOT very family friendly with regard to – more... my situations. I went through a VERY difficult time in my life (losing loved ones, and an injury that happened to me), and I was fired because my perfomance slipped, due to the personal reasons I was going through.
I am sorry to say that I would not recommend anyone work for them, more jobs are going overseas, than are staying in the US. – less

Efficient and friendly team spirit
Pricing Analyst (Former Employee), London – March 1, 2013
Pros: very analytical, high precision to detail, friendly team spirit
Cons: uncertainity in work loads as a consequence of market bahaviour, certain level of stress due to accuracy levels expected
A typical day at work

The day comprises of intraday snapshots for the valuation of european, asian and far eastern financial instruments held by local clients. Once all asset prices have been validated using Bloomberg, Reuters & Telekurs, they are are submitted to the Fund Accounting team for fund valuation. Several other duties were allocated amongst – more... the team to include such things as stale price reporting, third parties, etc.

What you learnt

I learnt to adhere to tight deadlines, prioritising/organising workloads, work efficiently within a team, paying greater attention to detail, maximise accuracy, developed stronger analytical skills.

Management

The management was very friendly, understanding, motivating. We received praised for meeting our yearly targets as a team.

Your co-workers

I worked amongst a very friendly and supportive team. The culture was such that we always helped each other out which always helped ensure accuracy and efficiency and hence assist in meeting targets.

The hardest part of the job

100% accuracy was expected which was occasionally stressful given the stringent deadlines we needed to adhere to. Market analysis of asset performance can also be difficult given the uncertain economic conditions brought by the recession.

The most enjoyable part of the job

Due to the tight deadlines and the activities in between, the day was made quite complete and fulfilling, – less

Inadequate management
Call center (Current Employee), Westboro, MA – February 26, 2013
Pros: lunch brought to you if you work through lunch
Cons: miscomunications
There is a lot of information that needs to be learned at the company. They put you through a long training session but it doesn't actually cover much of the real information that you need to go through. There is always a lot of confusion and the management will tell you different things depending on who you ask. There is a lot of overtime to be had – more... during tax time. Mostly management says one thing but when you try to complete it and ask questions they blatantly ignore you. The main focus is call scores and not actual quality. When they want things done they want it done on your breaks or lunches and you have to be there 10-15 minutes early everyday just to log into your computer and have it set up which you do not get paid for and if you log onto your phone after the 10-15 minutes that you were there you are considered late even though you were actually there on time. The people are very friendly. – less

Embedded Control Analyst (Current Employee), Pittsburgh, PA – February 21, 2013
Pros: centrally located in downtown pittsburgh, making it accessible from all locations
Cons: financial company, making it highly scrutinized in many facets
I have worked at Mellon/BNYMellon for close to 13 years now in different aspects. With each department I have been involved, there are caring, determined people who work for the common goal of making the company what it is. It has been easy to work with the people in each department, but it has become increasingly frustrating to maintain skills when – more... management wants everyone to learn more than what they can handle. – less
