Talented? Check. In demand? Check. Handsome? You decide. Check out this Beatty -- Balfour Beatty. The company provides infrastructure and commercial services including engineering, design, construction, and maintenance. It operates primarily in the UK and North America, but has been expanding and today operates in more than 80 countries around the world. Balfour Beatty works on a range of project types including roads and railways, schools, military housing, hospitals, and airports. It also provides financing and is an active participant in public-private partnerships. US units include Balfour Beatty Infrastructure and Balfour Beatty Construction.
Balfour Beatty has grown rapidly, thanks largely to a series of acqusitions around the world. Chief among these was the 2009 purchase of New York-based transportation engineering firm Parsons Brinckerhoff for some $625 million. The combination of Balfour Beatty and Parsons Brinckerhoff fell in line with both companies' strategies for global growth. Parsons Brinckerhoff retained its name and became a subsidiary of Balfour Beatty. The acquisition also underscored Balfour Beatty's increasing focus on infrastructure, an area that offers added stability when the construction markets decline.
To those ends, key strategic markets for the group include emerging markets in Asia, Africa, and South America. The UK and North American infrastructure landscapes have been in recovery still, but look to provide plenty of opportunity for growth in the future.
In the UK, the company has recently acquired fit-out and refurbishment firms Office Project Group, Multibuild Hotels and Leisure, and Multibuild Interiors. It also bought parts of the general construction and affordable housing operations of bankrupt firm Rok. Such deals have broadened Balfour Beatty's range of commercial services and its client base. Similarly, in 2010 the company bought Canadian group Halsall, adding to its professional services segment. Other recent acquisitions include SpawMaxwell Company, the largest interior construction contractor in Texas. And in 2010, the company bought the military housing division of US real estate investment trust (REIT) GMH Communities.
Balfour Beatty's investment and development operations include privately funded infrastructure projects in the UK and internationally, in such sectors as power, health care, roads, education, and rail. The company also has partnerships with French firms AREVA and VINCI to bid on contracts to build new nuclear power plants there. Balfour Beatty has aggressively moved in on the airport business, bidding with a variety of partners on airport projects in the UK, Ireland, and the US. – less
