BWP Consulting Inc is looking for out-going, athletic, team-oriented individuals willing to work in the 2013 Mosquito Control Program. The technicians will be primarily responsible for controlling mosquitoes in their larval stages, although adult mosquito control may also be required. Larval mosquito control will be done by spreading a biological larvicide (Vectobac 200G or Aquabac 200G) with the active ingredient Bacillus thuringiensis var israelensis. Technicians will be given training and then will be responsible for coordinating the treatment of all infested standing water in their area. During peak floods, technician will be expected to work long days with time off at the end of the season in lieu of overtime pay. It is possible that technicians may also be required to spray malathion during the night to treat adult mosquitoes, although the goal is to reduce mosquitoes to a tolerable level through larval control.
Employees will be required to carry a 15 kg backpack larviciding applicator through thick brush and deep water (waist deep). They will also be required to provide helicopter support which entails lifting mulitiple18 kg bags of larvicide over their heads to fill the helicopter “seeder”. Staff may also be required to spend time in a helicopter directing the pilot to infested larval development habitats and therefore a good sense of direction is essential.
Skills (required and/or preferred):
Excellent communication skills as will be dealing with public almost daily. Quick to learn about the mechanisms of action of the biological larvicide and its impact on the environment and about West Nile Virus, its symptoms, hosts, and spread. Strong computer skills, as will be expected to enter data into a database on a daily basis. The candidate must own a computer and a cell phone, and have access to email and the internet. The individual selected for this position may occasionally be required to work alone and therefore must be self-motivated and enjoy independence.
Preference given to candidates familiar with the control area
Candidates must possess a minimum of a Class 7N drivers License and should be prepared to bring a driving record to interview (can be obtained for free by calling ICBC- they will email you the report)
Must obtain a valid Mosquito Control Pesticide Applicators Certificate before starting work (employer will pay for study manual and test).
Wage $16.00 per hour
