Main Duties

  • Design, perform, analyze and supervise biomedical experiments related to research in a range of childhood brain cancers including medulloblastoma and neuroblastoma; troubleshoots problems as they arise
  • Independently execute experiments involving protein biochemistry techniques such as cell culture, preparation of RNA, DNA and protein from cells and tissue specimens, Southern, Northern, Western blots, Q-PCR, RT-PCR and cloning
  • Transgenic mouse colony management including genotyping and general husbandry/health monitoring
  • Maintain active tissue quality control required for experiments scheduled in the laboratory
  • Use imaging software to document Western blot, DNA and protein electrophoresis results
  • Will assist with/train new technical staff, graduate students, undergraduate students and post-doctoral fellows
  • Introduce visiting scientists and trainees to all aspects of the lab operations
  • Provide significant contributions to the preparation of research publications
  • Participate in meetings related to technical and scientific aspects of the projects in the laboratory

Key Accountabilities

  • Performs a variety of established technical procedures according to written protocols
  • Performs experiments by following established laboratory procedures according to written protocols
  • Records results, including computer data entry
  • Provides input regarding modification of procedures as requested by the Department Head, Principal Investigator, or designate
  • Maintains and stores cell lines and primary cultures
  • Maintains and stores test materials and products
  • Maintains inventory of laboratory supplies and equipment
  • May demonstrate work methods or procedures to less experienced assistants as designated


  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and communicate effectively with faculty, staff, trainees and collaborators
  • B.Sc. graduate in Biochemistry, Microbiology, Genetics, Biology or other appropriate discipline
  • A minimum of four years related experience in a laboratory setting
  • Advanced knowledge and experience in microbiological culture, molecular and cell biology techniques Demonstrated computer skills for data analysis
  • Laboratory animal experimentation experience-small animal surgical experience would be preferable
  • Strong organization skills and ability to work in a team-oriented environment
  • Completion of all relevant UBC safety courses including biosafety and chemical safety
