BC Teen Challenge is a Christian faith-based organization which offers a one-year residential program for young men and women aged 19 or older who are trapped in life controlling addictions. Its purpose is to assist them in overcoming their addiction through the love and power of God. Teen Challenge was first established by Rev. David Wilkerson in 1958 when he worked with troubled youth on the streets of New York City. Since then Teen Challenge has grown to over 1,100 Centres in 100 countries around the world.
What was originally called Vancouver Teen Challenge began in 1965 and was re-launched in 2001 as BC Teen Challenge. BC Teen Challenge is part of the worldwide Teen Challenge network, operating four residential centres in British Columbia: women’s Centre located in Abbotsford (10 students) and three men’s Centres located in Chilliwack (20), Kelowna(24) and Lake Cowichan(15). BC Teen Challenge is registered under the BC Societies Act; is a registered charity with CRA and is a member of the Canadian Council of Christian Charities (CCCC)
Teen Challenge is funded from a variety of sources: largely from donations from individuals, businesses and churches as well as some public grant and foundation funding and internally generated funding from various business initiatives and special events.
The Manager, Vancouver Island Men’s Centre reports to the Executive Director, BC Teen Challenge. He/she is responsible for leadership of the Lake Cowichan Centre including: setting the spiritual tone, oversight of all operations: leadership of staff/interns/volunteers, delivery of an effective TC program, operation of the Centre including its spiritual vibrancy and financial viability.
Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities
1.) Spiritual and operational leadership to transform the lives of the men entrusted to the care of the BC Teen Challenge Vancouver Island Centre.
2.) Development of an effective, empowered and energized team of staff, interns/leaders in training (LITs) and volunteers.
3.) Engaging the students in Church Outreach, Other Events, Work Detail and Business Enterprises.
4.) Establishing a network of key supporters (individuals, churches, businesses) to sustain the Centre.
5.) Care of the Lake Cowichan personnel, facility and vehicles including compliance with regulations, safety, maintenance, providing a good environment for the students and a favourable image of Teen Challenge
6.) Achievement of annual operating budgets, control of costs, cash procedures and proper recording of all financial transactions, ensuring the financial viability of the Centre.
7.) Working closely with the Directors who support the Centre, e.g. Vehicle Donation Program, Work Detail, donor care, and so on
The ideal candidate has at least five years of Christian Ministry and non-profit/NGO experience at a leadership level. Post-secondary education in Christian or Leadership studies would be beneficial though not mandatory. The Vancouver Island Men’s Centre Manager must demonstrate exceptional Christian character, good leadership and delegation skills, the ability to work well with others and to be “hands-on” when necessary. He/she must be able to represent Teen Challenge well to the local church and business communities. Some business background and/or sales training would be a strong asset.
The person in this position must have a passion for Christian ministry, live with a biblically informed worldview, agree with the philosophy of BC Teen Challenge and demonstrate a sincere desire to help and love the people to whom BC Teen Challenge ministers.
