Depressing and less motivating
Mechanical Engineer (Former Employee), Lynchburg, VASeptember 17, 2013
Pros: the overall benefits is not bad, people are nice to work with, job security when economics is good
Cons: management and rewarding system are messed up
The depressing and less motivating work environment may have something to do with the corporate culture as well as concerns within the nuclear power industry. Redundant management teams and heavy overheads are dragging down the efficiency. More emphasis on people management rather than technical management tends to give wrong directions, which also – more... messes up the rewarding system, e.g. people that are technically strong with high productivity may be less rewarded than those who knows how to talk and play the game. – less

Team Leader/Supervisor (Current Employee), Lynchburg, VASeptember 2, 2013
Pros: good benefits, fun activities
Cons: flat organization - difficult to advance
AREVA primarily provides goods and services to nuclear utility companies. Therefore, AREVA's quality of deliverables must match the high expectations of its customers. The same is true about worker safety.

All my co-workers are highly educated. They are motivated to be as productive as possible in order to help the company's revenues. They take a high – more... amount of personal satisfaction by collaborative efforts.

The company is divided up according to disciplines. So, it is challenging to align one team's goals with another team.

The people are friendly. Co-workers are from a variety of countries, so one experiences a wide variety of cultures and languages. – less

A typical day at AREVA
Structural Engineer (Chief checker) (Former Employee), Erlangen, GermanyMarch 20, 2013
Pros: low budget lunches
Cons: managers don't know what their inferiors are doing.
5:30 getting up
5:45 taking a bus to my office
5:58 entering SIEMENS/AREVA area
6:00 switching all the lights on of that 100 engineers counting office
6:00-8:30 Checking the design calculation reports and drawings of OL3-steel platforms [NPP Olkiluoto, Finland]
8:30-8:45 Tea Coffee Time
8:45-12:00 While checking another OL3-steel platform I have to – more... answer a lot of questions of unexperienced structural co-engineers.
12:00-12:30 Lunch
12:30-16:30 Checking another two platforms.
16:30 Going home.
The hardest part of the job has been at the beginning of my job, when I had to check all incoming steel platforms without any help.
The most enjoyable part of the job has been to teach unexperienced newcomers. – less

good labour conditions-38 days holiday in france!
Thermal-hydraulic Engineer (Former Employee), La Defense, FranceJanuary 18, 2013
Pros: 8 weeks holidays per year thanks to french legislation
Cons: living in paris, very few opportunities to develope your position, frozen salaries after fukuyima
Working in France has lots of advantages regarding working conditions. i think no country gives you almost 8 weeks per year plus the non working days. at the same time it feels like working for the goverment, no pressure.
the biggest complain i have is their management. their strategy was/is/will be a failure in the near future. if they dont stand up – more... to the challenge they will be absorbed by EDF, as i dont see the french goverment allowing them to bankrupt. – less
