Healthcare Services Consultant (Contractor), Rockville, MD - October 5, 2015
Amerisource Bergen is a good company to work for. I would love to be a permanent employee but due to the conditions of my contract with the staffing agency which placed me here, I'm not eligible until June of 2017. I'm looking to work with a company as great as Amerisource Bergen but as a permanent employee with full benefits.
A typical day working at Amerisource Bergen consist of answering inbound calls addressing general questions about the drug and the program I work on. When not taking inbound calls, I call out to insurance companies which my patients have policies with to conduct a benefit verification. Next, I document the findings in the system and relate the outcome to the Clinical Nurses who work with the patients one on one. At times, if the drug isn't covered by the insurance company, I would have to conduct a prior authorization to ensure that the drug is covered. Since the patients have schizophrenia and the drug must be injected in the doctors office, I also would order the drug from the specialty pharmacy to be shipped to the doctor's office. In addition to this I also would then report the findings of the benefit verification to the doctor that the patients receive the drug from. I reach out to co-workers on a need bases.
The most challenging part of my job is getting the prior authorization to get the drug covered. It is very unpleasant to tell a patient with such chronic brain disease that they will not be able to get their drug because their insurance company doesn't cover the drug.
The most satisfying part of my job is getting the drug covered when I have preciously told it wasn't covered because the patients are happy that they are getting the medication. There's nothing more rewarding than that.
