The Company provides approximately 15.6 million people with drinking water, wastewater and other water-related services in 32 states and Ontario, Canada. The Company’s primary business involves the ownership of regulated water and wastewater utilities that provide water and wastewater services to residential, commercial and industrial customers, treating and delivering over one billion gallons of water per day. The Company’s subsidiaries that provide these services are generally subject to economic regulation by state Public Utility Commissions (PUCs) in the states in which they operate. American Water Works Company, Inc. operates in two segments: regulated businesses and non-regulated businesses. On November 1, 2007, the Company acquired S.J. Services, Inc. Effective June 29, 2007, the Company divested its United States-based residuals business group.
