The oay is good, extremely bad foreign management
Former employee (Current Employee) –  Edmonton, ABMarch 13, 2016
Altasteel was a good place when it's was owned by Scaw metals. New overseas ownership (Australian owned Company) are extremely poor management businessman.
There have been too many instances where accidents or incidents have occurred and not been reported due to fear of losing job.
The company finds loopholes in the collective agreement to they're advantage, taking away O.T. from employees, allocating funds to front office staff
To hire non essential employees. Employee moral is horrible due to poor management staff, union is not as active as they were years ago.
Company is more interested in cosmetically looking good, then investing into actual safety issues brought up by a large amount of employees.

Stay away from a mismanaged company, Australia does not know nor care bout employees values, only production and to save funds for their own use, not keeping unionized bargaining employees happy.

Stay away!!!
Cons
Back stabbing union brotherhood, safety and constant machine issues

More good than bad.
Maintenance Supervisor (Former Employee) –  Edmonton, ABSeptember 30, 2015
A dedicated crew of both union and lower management, the company has a great base. The middle management focus tries to balance things, but upper management do not seem connected to reality both in the plant and in the world around them. They are too far isolated with few visits to the plant, a lack of contact one-on-one with the workers and an office that is about 1/3 kilometer away from the plant itself. They work in ideal world scenarios not recognizing that the plant is aged beyond its expected life cycle. Purchasing was a roadblock as well, not understanding how their choice to re-route or reject things effects the plant and not willing to listen when it is explained to them. A previous president had habit of coming into boardrooms to express discontent and discipline people in public shamings and that set a precident that made management an uncomfortable role to be in.
Great programs, all are in place to make it world class and if they are used to maximum benefit, the plant would be a top notch place to be. Overall, it is no worse than other plants and has good bones to work improvement in.
Pros
banking overtime, dedication to safety, operations and maintenance crews are dedicated
Cons
purchasing convoluted, expected accountability is beyond what is in your control

Bunch of raging morons that shouldn't even be offered jobs flipping burgers.
Millwright (Current Employee) –  EdmontonAugust 18, 2015
Terrible work and garbage management, even with the worlds best employees, the management would still fail at everything. They cannot tell the difference from a pile of burger wrappers from a diamond. All they can tell you is what is written on their clipboard, any actually decision making is just randomly decided on. There is no educated experience with them and they let all the good employees leave or fail to hire any qualified people that could actually help out the company. There is a reason they are always actively hiring, even in with the economy the way it is. This place is pathetic and it would be in your best interest to avoid it entirely.
Pros
You feel smart working with a bunch of idiots

Extremely negative workplace
Stacker Operator (Former Employee) –  Edmonton, ABApril 27, 2015
Daily tasks are complicated and sometimes rendered completely impossible by aging and or broken equipment. Work pacing is sporadic because of equipment and process failures. Very frustrating workplace and workers while friendly with each other are often overworked and distressed by working conditions. Safety is also a whitewash program...what looks good is good.
Pros
Helpful co-workers
Cons
Management completely out of touch with operations

Horrible Management
Buyer (Former Employee) –  Edmonton, ABDecember 18, 2014
As a salaried employee, if you work hard they will take note and dump more and more on you until you break because it is simply just too much. Management makes very poor decisions and does not seem to consider possible outcomes of those decisions prior to implementing them causing excessive stress and chaos within the organization.

New management from Australia are the managers they teach you NOT to be in university.

Everything they do is counterintuitive and only results in the destruction of employee morale.
Pros
good pay
Cons
very poorly managed from president down.

Tough Shifts Poorly Managed
Shift Worker (Current Employee) –  Edmonton, ABSeptember 12, 2013
Anyone above the Foreman level are too disconnected from the operations reality to be effective.

Safety department is a joke.

HR staff would never be employed anywhere but here because AltaSteel rewards management incompetence that would result in termination at any other company.

The President is a throw back to the 1940's. Beat staff for any problems and take ALL the credit for successes.

All the good managers have quit over the past 6-9 months because the upper managers run the place so poorly.
Pros
$30/hour to start
Cons
everything else.

Poor work environment.
Millwright (Former Employee) –  MillwrightDecember 17, 2012
Not a trades union. Management is always looking to point a finger instead of working on solution. Very poor work culture all around. Low moral. If something doesn't change I don't see a future for the company. Steel making side of plant is very dirty and unhealthy area to work. Not enough money to work there.
Pros
benifits, in town, overtime is double time.
Cons
work environment, management, union protects the cancer, no chance at moving up or bettering oneself.

Quality Assurance Technologist (Current Employee) –  Edmonton, ABApril 10, 2012
Good place for union workers, no place for hard-working professionals. No chance for advancement. Management who wastes money on things which are not required. No bonuses. Very dirty.
Pros
good benefits for salaried workers.
Cons
no chances for advancement for non-union workers.
