Alavida LIfestyles, a company of luxurious and well-respected Retirement Residences, serving seniors in the Ottawa Community is currently seeking a Director of Resident Health Services.

Reporting directly to the Chief Operating Officer, the Director of Resident Health Services (DRHS) is responsible for the design and execution of the standard of care for nursing and resident health care across the Organization.

Key Responsibilities

  • In collaboration with the Senior Leadership Team, communicate the vision/strategic direction for nursing, and its relationship to all other department functions; actively contribute to strategic planning
  • Drive consistency of care across all Alavida resident facilities
  • Promote all facets of Alavida’s graduated health care model to staff, residents and the wider community
  • Direct the planning, implementation, and evaluation, of clinical policies and programs
  • Research and recommend necessary changes to, or new options for, resident care
  • Champion the research, recommendations, implementation and training on any new technologies required to achieve corporate objectives
  • Identify corporate learning/training needs; provide education support to staff
  • Maintain professional nursing standards through educational programs, development sessions, and professional activities; ensure compliance by regular site visits and personal contact with DOCs
  • Support and motivate DOCs so that they may develop their leadership strengths, thereby enhancing individual and team performance
  • Recommend to the Senior Leadership Team, programs or courses that contribute to the talent development of key nursing personnel, as part of a career development plan
  • Assist DOCs with hiring and retention of energetic, committed and highly professional nursing staff
  • Work closely with the Marketing/Sales team to determine effective pre-admission assessments and sustainable resident care service offerings (our product) that will respect financial parameters as well as consumer demands for graduated levels of care
  • Work closely with all functional department heads to understand the Alavida Care Model (as a product) and capture synergies between nursing and all other departments
  • Develop a resident need classification and staffing model to identify the ideal resident and staff mix to maximize the productivity and profitability of each Alavida resident center
  • Allocate resources in a way that is both financially viable and sustainable in consideration of personnel, process, infrastructure and commercial marketability
  • Conduct reviews with the Director of Finance, as required, to ensure proper financial operation, comparison of actual-to-budget reviews (“Performance-to-Plan” reviews)
  • Maintain awareness of facility performance indicators relative to industry norms
  • Collaborate in the preparation of annual budgets for both operations and capital expenditures; help to decide capital expenditures within any particular fiscal period
  • Establish and monitor consistently high standard nursing care practices to meet residents’ needs
  • Monitor compliance for proper resident health records and wellness planning
  • Ensure the timely completion and submission of all required corporate, financial, healthcare and/or regulatory reports
  • Develop and implement healthcare policies and procedures that are, at all times, in full legal and ethical compliance with the College of Nurses of Ontario, Ontario government regulations, and accepted industry standards
  • Implement quality assurance methods to capitalize upon areas of strength, and quickly determine deficient areas
  • Establishes the educational competencies for nurses and non-regulated care providers; ensures ongoing compliance of prescribed professional standards
  • Fully intervene, control, investigate, and respond to any crisis situation; develop recommendations for any incident that breaches professional standards or procedures
  • Understand the corporation’s responsibilities and follow all health and safety policies and procedures as set out in current department manuals
  • Monitor adherence to safety policies and procedures of subordinates, and promote safe work practices for self and others
  • Ensure that all reported injuries/illnesses are treated promptly and accurately documented according to established policy, and that timely transportation for treatment of critical injuries is arranged
  • Develop and nurture relationships with medical and healthcare professionals and organizations to foster an awareness of, and appreciation for, the Alavida Lifestyles care model; seek areas of shared interests, and potential partnership
  • Support Directors of Care (DOCs) with residents/families to resolve problems, concerns or complaints; maintains an effective follow-up process for communicating the resolutions of issues and concerns
  • Attend resident meetings (Residents Council meetings) if invited
  • Show initiative, by recommending and proposing to the Chief Operating Officer and Senior Leadership Team colleagues, education/professional training courses or programs, that will enhance the organizational leadership and clinical performance of the DRHS

Qualifications, Knowledge & Experience

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing or Healthcare Administration
  • Registered, and in good standing, with the College of Nurses of Ontario and Registered Nurses Association of Ontario
  • Individual coaching/mentoring; effective group leadership
  • Personnel management/development processes/talent and performance assessment techniques
  • Relevant computer knowledge and ability to adapt to/implement changing technology
  • Strong business communication/presentation skills
  • Effective, professional decision-making processes/capabilities
  • Applicable government regulations impacting our business environment
  • Demonstrated track record of successful, progressively senior leadership roles, with evidence of staff and team development within the seniors, retirement living, or long-term care or healthcare sectors
  • Have developed positive relationships with both union and non-union staff across multiple work sites; proven ability to deal with performance deficiencies
  • Applied sound management principles and techniques to individual and group situations
  • Exercised effective listening/communication skills; proven ability to show empathy and caring toward a dependent clientele and those related to the clientele
  • Strong interpersonal and interest-based negotiation skills, with particular attention to dealing with difficult conversations, building trust, maintaining authenticity/integrity
  • Must be able to deal effectively, at times, with prolonged/concentrated periods of administrative duties in relation to report preparation/submission, special projects, etc.
