Instrument Technician (Former Employee), Elgin Platform – April 8, 2013
Pros: plenty of online courses
Cons: a bullying culture in maintenance offshore.
I worked Offshore with them for one year, after which I chose to leave. The salary was low for my Trade, with little room for increase or progress. There is also some bullying offshore and the H.R department is weak. The platform is O.K and modern, but sleeping quarters can be noisy as they are in the hull beneath the utilities plant.
ET (Former Employee), Katy Texas – February 6, 2013
Cons: management
Not good place to work. Many problems with customer service. Management dont care and safety is a problem. I seen them hide cut/old lifting straps so customer wont see them. They continue to use the same straps
Working offshore is different from working in an office onshore - obviously. The long working day (12 hours), the harsh weather conditions, especially in the North Sea, the remoteness, and the reliance on helicopter travel do not suit everyone. Others find it a challenging but refreshing environment, quite different from the nine-to-five routine and – more... the rush-hour commute. – less

Working offshore so do a 12 hour shift. Work in construction so its generally accepted you will help out with all the trades in the activity for the day regardless if your expertise is needed. I enjoy this as you pick up skills from different trades and can therefore assist them better in the future.
You definitely feel part of a team out there and – more... the workforce will then assist you when you are carrying out your job.
I enjoy the offshore lifestyle in the sense you get lots of time off to pursue other things you enjoy outside work and you get holidays with the 2 on 2 off rota that I currently am under contract. – less

3. Management could be more professional and supportive towards their technicians and tend to play favorites when it comes down to sending techs to – more... client sites.
4. Dealing with the lack of professionalism amongst your surroundings.
