Laboratory Assistant (LA3)
Inorganics

Location: ALS Environmental – Grande Prairie, AB

Reports to: Laboratory Supervisor

Shift: Tuesday to Saturday 3:00pm - 11:00pm (Evening Shift)
Some on-call or overtime coverage may be required.

About the Position
This position will assist with routine laboratory functions, such as preparing client samples for analysis and routine lab maintenance. You will be working independently and in a team environment, with an emphasis on providing quality and efficient service to clients.

Specific Responsibilities

  • Process samples in a timely manner, to meet client Turnaround Times (TAT) and holding requirements;
  • Prepare (drying, grinding, pasting, homogenizing), subsample, and extract samples of different matrices (ex. water, waste, and soil) for analysis;
  • Responsible for all required sample processing and analysis procedures, including:

o Water, soil and waste sample screening, filtrations, and digestions
o Water and waste sample extractions and prep
o Soil sample digestions, extractions, and leeching
o Monitor temperatures/volumes/masses.

  • Perform basic analytical methods using basic meters (i.e. pH analysis);
  • Screen, dispense, filter, dilute, and digest samples for instruments;
  • Responsible for the calibration, routine maintenance, and troubleshooting of basic lab instruments;
  • Responsible for basic wet chemistry and manual meter analyses
  • Perform basic analytical methods using basic meters, flashpoint, as designated by section leader/supervisor
  • Responsible for all required data processing for Quality Control and Quality Assurance purposes (i.e. calculations, data review, data entry, archival, etc.),
  • Communicate with the Client Services staff as required,
  • May act as a Team Lead for junior staff;
  • Training team members, as required;
  • Clean glassware and laboratory equipment;
  • Monitor and restock laboratory consumables/chemicals;
  • Samples shelving, archiving, and disposal;
  • Prepare reagents, standards, and reference materials;
  • Perform all required record-keeping and documentation;
  • Monitor controlled equipment
  • Prepare (drying, grinding, pasting, homogenizing), subsample, and extract samples of different matrices (ex. water, waste, and soil) for analysis;
  • Operate and maintain simple laboratory equipment;
  • Use correct methods in accordance with the established procedures and schedules while ensuring analytical quality;
  • Observe established safety regulations and comply with all ALS health and safety policies and procedures;
  • Other duties as assigned by the Supervisor or Team Lead.

Physical Demands

  • Ability to lift up to 30 lbs./14 kg on a regular basis and carry for short distances;
  • Ability to sit or stand for long periods of time;
  • Manual dexterity to perform intricate and/or repetitive tasks;
  • Wear issued personal protective equipment (PPE) such as dust masks, gloves etc., when required;

About you
The ideal candidate would have:

  • Completion of high school diploma or equivalent required;
  • Lab technician training or knowledge of environmental sciences is an asset;
  • 1 to 2 years’ experience working in a analytical laboratory or environment science is an asset;
  • Knowledge from high school science courses and/or basic laboratory safety is an asset.

You would also have:

  • Good English communication skills required (auditory, verbal, written, and reading);
  • Basic user of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and Outlook), with basic computer skills;
  • Accurate and efficient data entry skill is an asset;
  • Ability to perform repetitive tasks accurately in a fast-paced environment;
  • Well organized, with the ability to meet strict deadlines;
  • Analytical and process oriented, with the ability to critically think in ambiguous situations
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team;
  • Strong work ethic and willingness to take on varied tasks as required;
  • Commitment to excellence and a client-focused attitude.
