Protection & Control Communication Technologist - Port Moody (CPC Technologist)

Number of positions: 1 Job Location: Burrard SC Station

Employment type: Permanent Region: Lower Mainland

Hours of work: Full-time (37.5 hrs/wk) Flexible Work Role: Field

Hourly Rate: $ 53.81

What you'll do

  • As per IBEW Collective Agreement.
  • A journeyperson CPC Technologist shall undertake work on communications, protection, and control equipment and
systems, as assigned.
  • Perform maintenance on the protection, communication, and control systems in BC Hydro; including equipment used for
detecting and responding to power system faults, controlling system devices, and data and voice transfer throughout the
province
  • Install and maintain substation equipment, as well as generator control systems, excitation systems, and governors
  • Install and maintain protective relaying equipment for detecting and responding to power system faults, and control
equipment including SCADA systems and programmable logic controllers
  • Install and maintain a variety of telecommunications equipment including microwave, power line carrier, very high
frequency/ultrahigh frequency radio system equipment, teleprotection, telephone, and supervisory control & data acquisition
equipment
  • Analyze fault records to verify equipment performance, oversee testing of plant equipment, and write technical reports
  • Commission and acceptance-test new and upgraded equipment installations
  • Review and maintain drawings associated with protection, control, and communications systems

What you bring

  • As per IBEW Collective Agreement.
  • Completed a national diploma program in electrical / electronics engineering technology from an accredited institution,
preferably with a power and/or communications option
  • A valid Class 5 B.C. driver's licence
  • Eligibility for registration with ASTTBC (Applied Science Technologists and Technicians of British Columbia)
  • Computer literacy in English
  • Mechanical aptitude is also required
  • Interpersonal skills are necessary in dealing with employees and internal/external customers; the ability to interact
effectively with other trades such as Mechanics, Electricians and Technologists is essential
  • Demonstrated commitment to safety and safe work practices

What else you should know

This position is affiliated with the international Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Union (IBEW local 258) www.ibew258.bc.
ca

  • BSY is projected to cease operations approximately October 2025. Impacted SFO employees will be managed through
Article 2 of IBEW Collective Agreement.

  • The successful candidates HQ will be at Burrard Synchronous Condense Station near Port Moody. Some travel will be
required to support other headquarters in the Lower Mainland as required.

  • Successful candidate will have 2+ years of experience working on protection & control systems in substation or generating
station setting.

  • The work is highly technical, involves sophisticated systems and equipment, and it appeals to those with good analytical
skills who are also creative problem solvers.

  • Working in adjacent areas and travelling away from headquarters will be required as the need arises.

  • A written assessment and hands on skills assessment covering technical, safety, and administrative skills may form part of
the selection process.

  • A condition of employment for this job is that you maintain the following requirements in good standing:
Communication Protection & Control Cert. = In Good Standing &
Class 5 DL = In Good Standing
