This role is responsible for:

  • Owning system-level design and technical decisions
  • Driving project execution from design through delivery
  • Acting as the primary technical reference for assigned programs
  • Bridging Engineering, Project Management, Quality, and Operations

Unlike a traditional Project Engineer, this role is expected to lead through influence, anticipate risks, and ensure both technical integrity and on-time delivery.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

System Ownership & Technical Leadership

  • Own system architecture, design integrity, and technical decisions across assigned projects
  • Review and validate designs (electrical, mechanical, integration)
  • Ensure compliance with customer specifications and industry standards
  • Lead design reviews (internal and customer-facing)
  • Support root cause analysis (RCA), NCRs, and corrective actions

Project Execution & Delivery

  • Drive execution of projects from kickoff through delivery
  • Define and manage deliverables, timelines, and priorities
  • Ensure alignment between Engineering, Purchasing, and Production
  • Identify risks early and implement mitigation strategies
  • Support on-time, right-first-time delivery

Cross-Functional Coordination

  • Act as the primary technical interface between departments
  • Collaborate closely with:
  • Project Managers (schedule & customer commitments)
  • Manufacturing (DFM, production readiness)
  • Quality (NCR, RMA, continuous improvement)
  • Supply Chain (technical validation of components/vendors)
  • Ensure clear communication and alignment across all stakeholders

Problem Solving & Continuous Improvement

  • Lead complex technical troubleshooting and issue resolution
  • Support and drive CAPA, FRACAS, and PFMEA activities
  • Identify opportunities for design standardization and process improvement
  • Contribute to lessons learned and knowledge sharing

Mentorship & Technical Guidance

  • Provide guidance and support to Project Engineers and junior engineers
  • Review work and ensure consistency with engineering standards
  • Act as a go-to resource for technical problem solving

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related field

Experience

  • 8+ years in engineering within a manufacturing or systems environment
  • Experience in both system design and project execution
  • Experience in rail, transportation, or electro-mechanical systems is a strong asset

Technical Competencies

  • Strong understanding of system integration (mechanical + electrical)
  • Experience with design reviews, validation, and testing
  • Familiarity with:
  • NCR / RMA processes
  • Root cause analysis methodologies
  • Engineering documentation and change management (ECN)
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and specifications

Soft Skills & Leadership Expectations

  • Strong ownership mindset (accountable for outcomes, not just tasks)
  • Ability to influence without direct authority
  • Excellent communication and cross-functional collaboration
  • Proactive problem-solving and risk anticipation
  • Comfortable operating in a fast-paced, evolving environment

Success Criteria (What “Good” Looks Like)

  • Projects delivered on time and within scope
  • Strong alignment between Engineering, Production, and PM
