Full job description

About Us

At Optimist, we build tools that shape industries from prototyping to production with a culture rooted in precision, performance, and practical innovation. Based in Calgary, we serve clients across sectors that keep the world moving by blending craftsmanship with smart engineering. Our team is small, skilled, and driven by the belief that better tools lead to better outcomes.

The Opportunity

We’re looking for a Quality Control Inspector to join our growing shop. This role plays a key part in maintaining the accuracy and reliability of the parts we produce. This is a hands-on, shop-floor position focused primarily on inspecting machined components throughout production.

This role is ideal for someone who enjoys practical, detail-oriented work and takes pride in ensuring parts meet exact specifications. The majority of your day will be spent on the shop floor performing inspections, verifying dimensions, and supporting machinists by providing clear quality feedback.

In addition to inspection duties, this person will help maintain and improve quality documentation using computer-based systems, ensuring our processes remain organized and consistent as we grow.

What You’ll Do

  • Perform in-process and final inspections on machined parts directly on the shop floor
  • Use precision measuring tools including calipers, micrometers, height gauges, bore gauges, thread gauges, and other inspection equipment
  • Verify parts meet drawing specifications, tolerances, and customer requirements
  • Read and interpret technical drawings, GD&T, and work instructions
  • Document inspection results accurately and maintain quality records
  • Identify non-conforming parts and communicate findings clearly with machinists and supervisors
  • Support root-cause investigation and corrective actions when quality issues arise
  • Assist in creating and maintaining inspection reports, checklists, and quality documentation
  • Help improve inspection procedures and contribute to continuous improvement efforts
  • Maintain calibration awareness and proper care of measuring equipment
  • Support a clean, safe, and organized shop environment

What We’re Looking For

  • Previous experience in quality control or inspection within a machine shop or manufacturing environment is an asset
  • Strong working knowledge of precision measuring tools and inspection techniques
  • Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings and tolerances (GD&T an asset)
  • Comfortable spending the majority of the day on the shop floor performing hands-on inspections
  • Strong attention to detail and a quality-first mindset
  • Strong computer skills (documentation, reports, and data entry)
  • Clear communication skills and ability to work closely with machinists and production staff
  • Reliable, organized, and consistent in following procedures

Why Join Us

  • Competitive wage based on experience and qualifications
  • Consistent full-time hours with opportunities for bonus
  • Supportive, tight-knit shop environment where your skills make a visible impact
  • Exposure to advanced tooling, modern equipment, and diverse projects
  • Opportunities for professional growth and skill development
