Full job description

Position Overview:

The Structured Cabling Technician will be responsible for installation, termination, testing, troubleshooting, and documentation of copper and fiber optic infrastructure. This role supports network deployments, retail technology rollouts, office relocations, wireless upgrades, and data center projects.

This is a field-intensive role requiring travel, overnight work, and flexibility to support customer maintenance windows.

Technical Responsibilities

Structured Cabling Installation

Install, route, secure, and dress:

● Cat5e / Cat6 / Cat6A / Cat7 copper cabling

● Indoor and outdoor rated communications cabling

● Plenum, riser, and shielded cabling systems

Build structured cabling pathways including:

● Cable trays

● Basket trays

● J-hooks

● Conduits

● Sleeves

● Surface raceways

Termination & Connectivity

Terminate and label:

● RJ45 keystone jacks

● Patch panels

● Surface boxes

● Consolidation points

● Workstation outlets

● Maintain T568A / T568B standards

● Ensure proper cable bend radius, separation, grounding, and strain relief practices

Fiber Optic Work

Install and terminate fiber infrastructure including:

● Multimode (OM3 / OM4)

● Single-mode fiber

● LC / SC / ST connectors

Perform fiber testing using:

● Light source / power meter

● OTDR (preferred)

● Visual fault locator

Testing & Certification

Test and certify copper links using platforms such as:

● Fluke Networks testers

Troubleshoot:

● Open pairs

● Split pairs

● NEXT failures

● Signal degradation

● Labeling discrepancies

● Produce professional certification reports for customer closeout packages

Equipment Deployment

Support installation and cabling of:

● Network switches

● Wireless access points

● Security devices

● POS systems

● ESL infrastructure

● Rack and cabinet systems

● UPS monitoring or low-voltage monitoring devices

Project Environment

Technicians may work in:

● Enterprise offices

● Retail stores

● Warehouses

● Hospitals

● Construction sites

● Manufacturing facilities

● Data centers

Travel & Scheduling Requirements

Candidates must be comfortable with:

● Daily travel across Ontario

● Overnight stays when project schedules require

● Night shifts for customer cutovers

● Weekend deployments

● Early morning site access windows

● A valid G-class driver’s license and reliable transportation are required.

Required Qualifications

● 2+ years of structured cabling field experience

● Experience reading construction drawings, floor plans, and IDF/MDF layouts

● Comfortable working on ladders, lifts, and elevated platforms

● Strong understanding of low-voltage safety practices

● Ability to work independently with minimal supervision

● Ability to lift 50+ lbs of tools/material

Preferred Certifications

Candidates with any of the following are strongly preferred:

● BICSI Technician or Installer

● Lift certification

● Fall protection

● WHMIS

● Working at Heights

● First Aid / CPR

Pay: $17.89-$30.00 per hour
