Overview

We are looking for an Instrumentation & Control Specialist to support the design, development, and ongoing support of control panels and monitoring systems for wastewater treatment applications. This role combines control system design (hardware & software), hands-on technical work, and troubleshooting support.

Key Responsibilities

System Design & Development

  • Design, develop, integrate, and test of PLC-based, IoT-enabled control systems for on-site wastewater treatment systems
  • Assist embedded/web developer with the development and testing of IoT platform hardware, software, and functionalities, such as functional specification, data visualization, alarm criteria, and UI design
  • Author and maintain documentation for control panel design, PLC/HMI programming, IoT platform functionalities, and electrical installation, such as instructions, panel schematics & layout, BOMs, operation manual
  • Collaboratively to develop novel control algorithms for integration into PLC software
  • Support the development and testing of remote monitoring (IoT) systems
  • Create clear documentation including system layouts, wiring diagrams, and user manuals

Production & Implementation

  • Oversee the production of both PLC-based and off-the-shelf control panels, instrumentation, and IoT hardware, including establishing SOPs, supervising production workers / vendors and building/ordering I&C assemblies and components.
  • Select and source control system components such as control panels, VFDs, sensors etc.
  • Design and configure control panels (including schematics and layouts) onsite wastewater treatment plants
  • Program and set up PLCs and IoT monitoring systems
  • Prepare and configure instrumentation such as sensors and drives
  • Work collaboratively project managers and purchaser(s) to coordinate panel builds, component ordering, and delivery
  • Maintain accurate inventory of I&C components/assemblies and other records in Dynamic 365 Business Central

Technical Support & Field Work

  • Attend onsite meetings for treatment plant commissioning and instrumentation calibration
  • Provide technical support to onsite wastewater technicians, installers, and customers
  • Troubleshoot control systems remotely and on-site when required
  • Perform site visits for system testing, repairs, and upgrades
  • Support retrofits and system improvements on existing installations

Qualifications & Skills

  • Understanding of MCU-based control equipment such as PLC, HMI, FPGA, Raspberry Pi, or Arduino, and their program development using ladder logic, structured text, C/C++, and/or VHDL.
  • Knowledge of IoT and related web technologies such as cellular/wi-fi connectivity, data integration/storage/analysis/visualization, alarm criteria/notifications, and web design.
  • Understanding of motor control devices such as relays, contactors, overload relays, and VFDs.
  • Knowledge of analog and digital sensors, including 0-5V, 4-20mA, Modbus RTU, and Modbus TCP sensors; or equivalent knowledge in analog & digital circuits, signals and instrumentation.
  • Familiarity of common communication protocols such as TCP/IP, Modbus, CAN, UART, and/or I2C; or equivalent knowledge in digital communication.
  • Experience in electrical schematic and mechanical layout drawings using AutoCAD.
  • Hands-on experience in the fabrication, wiring, prototyping, testing, troubleshooting, or repairing electrical and/or electronic devices.
  • The following experiences are considered assets: PLC/HMI programming (Schneider/Modicon, Unitronics, Allen-Bradley, Siemens, Mitsubishi, Omron, Wago), control system integration (sensors, VFDs, IoT devices), UL/CSA standards such as UL508A and Canadian Electrical Code, working in a panel shop environment, develop/program embedded systems.

Education

  • Degree in Electrical Engineering OR Diploma in Electrical Engineering Technology (or similar experience)
